The hexameric undecyl-resorcin[4]arene capsule () features eight discrete structural water molecules located at the vertices of its cubic suprastructure. Combining NMR spectroscopy with classical molecular dynamics (MD), we identified and characterized two distinct species of this capsule, - and -, respectively featuring 8 and 15 water molecules incorporated into their respective hydrogen-bonded networks. Furthermore, we found that the ratio of the - and - found in solution can be modulated by controlling the water content of the sample. The importance of this supramolecular modulation in capsules is highlighted by its ability to perform acid-catalyzed transformations, which is an emergent property arising from the hydrogen bonding within the suprastructure. We show that the conversion of - to - enhances the catalytic rate of a model Diels-Alder cyclization by 10-fold, demonstrating the cofactor-derived control of a supramolecular catalytic process that emulates natural enzymatic systems.

Understanding hydrogen bonding and ion-specific interactions in water, sodium sulfate (NaSO), and acetonitrile (ACN) systems remains challenging due to their complex, dynamic nature. Here, Raman spectroscopy is employed to probe hydrogen bonding networks and ion reorganization in NaSO aqueous solutions with different ACN concentrations. The results indicate that, at low ACN concentrations in the ternary solutions, hydrogen bonding between ACN and water molecules disrupts the original hydration structure of the ions, resulting in the formation of small ion clusters via electrostatic interactions.

This study presents a straightforward and rapid method for preparing graphene aerogel by integrating a sodium alginate (SA)-metal ion crosslinking system, a bubble template, and an osmotic dehydration process. Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were dispersed into the solution crosslinked by SA and metal ions, leading to rapid gelation of GO under ambient conditions. To minimize structural damage to the porous network caused by water molecules during the drying process, an osmotic dehydration technique was employed as an auxiliary drying method.

Transition metal fluorides because of the high electronegativity of fluorine may enhance the local electron density of the metal sites and promote water molecule dissociation and charge transfer. However, enhancing the intrinsic activity of fluorides to improve material stability remains a challenge. Herein, we develop an innovative four-step synthetic strategy (electrochemical deposition → co-precipitation → ligand exchange → in situ fluorination) to engineer three-dimensional porous Fe-doped CoF nanocubes vertically anchored on MXene (Fe-CoF/MXene/NF).

Hypothesis: On highly cleaned planar surfaces submerged in highly cleaned water, flat surface nanobubbles with an angle of attachment of ∼15 are observed - never on engineering surfaces submerged in plain water, though here unidentified cavitation nuclei are always present and cause low tensile strength.
Experiments: In the present study, surface nanobubbles are generated by standard experimental techniques on a polished steel surface, and we find that the shape and the angles of attachment of the bubbles are influenced by the local substrate topography. These observations align with the theory of non-adsorbed liquid zones, which explains a surface nanobubble as a bubble with a skin of contamination molecules, which bond along the bubble rim at a contact angle of ∼14.

Objective: Long-term administration of dexamethasone (DEX) to treat severe inflammation or autoimmune disorders often result in skeletal muscle atrophy and functional decline. Exosomes facilitate intercellular communication by transferring bioactive molecules, reflecting the characteristics of their tissue of origin. Myostatin-knockout (MSTN) mice exhibit muscle hypertrophy, and their muscle-derived exosomes (KO-EXOs) retain this phenotype.
