Article Abstract

Nanotechnology is a key enabling technology with billions of euros in global investment from public funding, which include large collaborative projects that have investigated environmental and health safety aspects of nanomaterials, but the reuse of accumulated data is clearly lagging behind. Here we summarize challenges and provide recommendations for the efficient reuse of nanosafety data, in line with the recently established FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) guiding principles. We describe the FAIR-aligned Nanosafety Data Interface, with an aggregated findability, accessibility and interoperability across physicochemical, bio-nano interaction, human toxicity, omics, ecotoxicological and exposure data. Overall, we illustrate a much-needed path towards standards for the optimized use of existing data, which avoids duplication of efforts, and provides a multitude of options to promote safe and sustainable nanotechnology.

Nitrogen(N) represents an essential macronutrient that fundamentally governs plant growth and development, while nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) optimization has emerged as a crucial strategy for sustainable intensification of agricultural production systems. Enhancing NUE in oat cultivars remains a significant challenge with limited mechanistic understanding. To unravel the regulatory networks involved in N stress adaptation, we conducted RNA sequencing on oat seedlings subjected to graded N treatments.

The fruits of data shepherding: A collection of open FAIR datasets for titanium dioxide coated photocatalytic surfaces.

NanoImpact

August 2025

CNR-ISSMC Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali Ceramici, Via Granarolo, 64, 48018 Faenza, RA, Italy. Electronic address:

This paper presents a large-scale collaborative effort within a multi-partner consortium, to systematically structure, curate, and openly share data in alignment with the FAIR principles. The data result from a case study of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanomaterials (NMs) for photocatalytic depolluting surfaces, produced via various spray coating techniques under the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approach. The data are publicly available through a dedicated Zenodo community (https://zenodo.

Study Question: What is the best protocol to establish a long-term stable three-dimensional (3D) model for human primary ovarian cells?

Summary Answer: We developed and characterized long-term cultured 3D models of primary ovarian somatic cells isolated from adult tissues, using Biosilk as a scaffold.

What Is Known Already: models that mimic ovaries are crucial for elucidating the biological mechanisms underlying follicle activation and growth, hormonal activity, ovarian angiogenesis, damage in response to toxic exposures, and other biological mechanisms that enable the functionality of this complex organ. Three-dimensional systems are particularly relevant because they replicate heterogeneity and cell-cell communication among different ovarian cell types.

Background: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) currently lacks highly specific biomarkers for clinical screening. This study aimed to identify and validate novel auxiliary diagnostic markers for EOC.

Methods: Through integrated analysis of transcriptome sequencing data and single-cell RNA sequencing from public databases, we identified mesothelin (MSLN) as an EOC-specific target.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts regulating nanomedicine to overcome sorafenib resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma with portal vein tumor thrombus.

Portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) is a common and severe indicator in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), characterized by a poor prognosis and limited response to existing therapies. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play an important role in promoting HCC metastasis and contribute to resistance against sorafenib (SOR) resistance, which is a standard treatment for advanced HCC. The data from single-cell RNA sequencing highlights the critical role of C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12) in the activation of CAFs.
