Using leaf fibers from pineapple (PALFs) as a model dual-purpose plant, we deliberately explore the effect of bio- and semibiobased treatment using xylanase, cellulase, and a mixture of pectinase and amylase. We assess these treatments for their potential to selectively and precisely remove lignocellulosic components. Additionally, we examine how they modify the relative content of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, as these are key factors affecting the physical appearance, dimensional structures, and mechanical integrity.

Urban flooding, exacerbated by climate change and the expansion of impervious surfaces, poses growing risks to sustainable urban development. Enhancing soil infiltration through green infrastructure is a promising nature-based solution, yet its hydrological effectiveness and economic viability under diverse rainfall scenarios remain insufficiently quantified. This study develops an interdisciplinary framework integrating column experiments, physically distributed hydrological modeling, and cost-benefit analysis to assess ceramsite-amended soils for urban flood resilience.

River systems, besides shaping their landscapes through the formation of Fluvisols, can also act as pathways for transporting significant pollutants, affecting both the river and its surrounding areas. One such pollutant is mercury (Hg). To assess the impact on sediments and adjacent riverbanks, including Fluvisols and their vegetation, the alluvial plains near Poland's most important river have been studied to understand this process and propose effective management measures.

Eukaryotic harmful and toxic microalgae, along with their derived toxins, pose significant threats to seafood safety, human health, and marine ecosystems. Here, we developed a novel full-length 18S rRNA database for harmful and toxic microalgae and combined metabarcoding with toxin analyses to investigate the ecological patterns of phytoplankton communities and the underlying mechanism of associated toxic microalgae risks. We identified 79 harmful and toxic species in Hong Kong's coastal waters, with dinoflagellates and diatoms representing the majority of toxic and harmful taxa, respectively.

Amid the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the EU's Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR), which aims to restore degraded areas in the coming decades, post-mining sites must be integrated into biodiversity and ecosystem recovery strategies as key contributors. While mining, quarrying, and other extractive activities have considerable environmental impacts, they also present massive opportunities to create valuable habitats, support biodiversity, guide restoration efforts, and contribute to conservation. A strong foundation of scientific and practical knowledge is already in place, yet implementation gaps persist, and regulatory frameworks remain under-utilised for restoring these degraded areas.
