Article Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify whether the efficacy of extracting hesperidin and narirutin from peel by-products can be increased by combining pulsed electric field (PEF) and subcritical water extraction (SWE). The samples were treated with a PEF at a strength of 3 kV/cm for 60 and 120 s. Subsequent SWE was conducted at extraction temperatures of 110-190 °C for 3-15 min. The concentration of hesperidin was highest at 46.96 ± 3.37 mg/g peel (dry basis) after PEF treatment at 120 s, combined with SWE at 150 °C for 15 min, while that of narirutin peaked at 8.76 ± 0.83 mg/g after PEF treatment at 120 s, integrated with SWE at 190 °C for 5 min. The concentrations of both hesperidin and narirutin increased with PEF treatment time. The PEF increased the amounts of hesperidin and narirutin extracted by 22.1% and 33.6%, respectively. This study demonstrate the potential of PEF pretreatment for enhancing the SWE of flavonoids from peel.

Tangerine pomace (TGP), a byproduct of juice processing, holds great potential as a source of health-promoting phytochemicals. Its chemical complexity, however, requires high-resolution analytical techniques and tailored solvent strategies for effective extraction. This study utilized comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS) and other advanced instrumentations to thoroughly profile solvent-specific phytochemicals extracted with ethanol and n-hexane.

An efficient and rapid supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) method was established for the analysis of flavonoids in Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (CRP), the best conditions were obtained by optimizing the parameters of the SFC method. The peak area obtained by SFC analysis of CRP samples, combined with chemical pattern recognition, was used to establish a model to evaluate the quality of Guang Chenpi (GCP) and Chenpi (CP) in CRP. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) proved to be an excellent method that can accurately distinguish GCP from CP.

Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium peel ('Chenpi' tea) is a popular food-medicine functional tea, which mainly existing unsteamed (CRP) and steamed (SCRP) products. In this study, a combination of electronic nose and GC-MS analysis showed that aged SCRP had a more intense aroma, which was attributed to the significant reduction or disappearance of components representing refreshing aroma, such as β-Myrcene and d-Limonene, while some components with thick odors like Valencene were newly formed. For the 'dryness'-like effect, the weaker effect of SCRP relative to CRP was initially confirmed in rats, as characterized by water intake, submandibular gland index, and hemorheology, consistenting with the expression trend of aquaporin (AQP) 2, 3 and 5 mRNA.

Zhizhu pills (ZZP) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been extensively applied in the treatment of spleen deficiency and constipation for many years. As a commonly used prescription in Traditional Chinese medicine, there had been a controversy over whether to use raw Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (RRAM) or Bran-Fired Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (BRAM) in ZZP. In this study, a specific, sensitive, fast and accurate liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed to analyze the main active components in ZZP.

The modernization and globalization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) face challenges such as unclear active compounds and inadequate quality control. Taking Xuefu Zhuyu Oral Liquid (XZOL) as an example, this study proposed an artificial intelligence (AI) -driven strategy for active compounds discovery and non-destructive quality control. Firstly, the multi-wavelength fusion high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprints were constructed to comprehensively characterize the chemical composition of XZOL.
