Article Abstract

In order to address problems of safety and identification in gas detection, an optical detection method based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was studied to detect ethanol vapor. A SERS device of silver nanoparticles modified polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was realized by freeze-drying method. This SERS device was placed in a micro transparent cavity in order to inject ethanol vapor of 4% and obtain Raman signals by confocal Raman spectrometer. We compared different types of SERS devices and found that the modification of polyvinylpyrrolidone improves adsorption of ethanol molecules on surfaces of silver nanoparticle, and finally we provide the mechanism by theory and experiment. Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) simulation shows that single layer close-packed Ag nanoparticles have strong local electric field in a wide spectral range. In this study, we provide a case for safety and fingerprint recognition of ethanol vapor at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

This study investigated headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME)-gas chromatography (GS)/mass spectrometry as a low-complexity method for accurate measurement of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) changes in humans over time following alcohol consumption. The aim was to develop an analytical method that would require as small blood samples as possible-smaller than that required for the conventional method-thereby reducing the burden on the subject. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as the fiber material for SPME, and a DB-WAX capillary column was used for GC.

This study presents the design and functional evaluation of a biodegradable nanocomposite film (CPZG) composed of chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), and garlic extract (GE) for active fish packaging. The film was fabricated via solvent casting and characterized using FTIR, SEM, XPS, and EDX, confirming successful molecular-level integration and uniform dispersion of ZnONPs and phytochemicals. GC-MS profiling revealed key organosulfur compounds such as diallyl disulfide and allyl trisulfide, with evidence of both sustained release and long-term retention within the polymer matrix.

: The melt-spinning process has seen limited application in the pharmaceutical industry. However, nano- and microfibrous structures show significant potential for novel drug delivery systems, due to their high specific surface area. To facilitate broader adoption in pharmaceutical technology, critical parameters influencing fiber quality and yield must be investigated.

Because of their tunable refractive index and surface functionalities, biopolymers have emerged as excellent candidates for the fabrication of sustainable optical fibers. To date, the focus has been on identifying suitable biopolymers for optical fiber fabrication and their associated waveguiding properties. Despite a few studies showing their potential for short-distance applications and humidity sensing, the quantitative sensing of environmental parameters using biopolymer optical fibers has not been reported.

Background: Memory impairment is frequent among alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients, and we lack specific biomarkers to detect it. Certain apolipoproteins were linked to cognition, and carrying the APOE4 gene is a vulnerability factor to memory impairment in AUD patients. We explored memory deficits in alcohol-dependent male mice and humans versus controls, and their relationship to Apolipoprotein AI (APOAI), apolipoprotein B (APOB), and apolipoprotein E (APOE) plasma levels.
