Article Abstract

In this work, the use of gold and gold alloy plaques is proposed for the first time, to reduce the dose to healthy organs in brachytherapy with Ir-192 sources. For dose simulations in tumour and healthy tissue, the MCNPX Monte Carlo code was used. The radiation source implemented in those simulations was benchmarked with well-known TG-43 criteria of dose rate constant, air-kerma strength, radial dose function, and 2D anisotropy function. For various arrangements of iridium sources and plaques of gold and gold alloy of various thicknesses, the dose distributions in an esophagus tumour and in surrounding healthy organs were simulated. The results showed that while the dose to the tumour is not much affected by the presence of gold plaques with a thickness of 3.5 mm in an optimized Ir sources' configuration, a relative reduction in average organ dose of 64%, 65%, 73%, 67%, and 35% was observed, for esophagus, thyroid, heart, stomach, and liver, respectively. Moreover, it was found that a gold plaque leads to smaller doses to healthy organs than a gold alloy plaque. It is concluded that gold plaques can be used to improve the treatment of esophageal cancer by HDR brachytherapy and to protect surrounding non-target organs.

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) is a leading cause of cervical cancer among women worldwide. This study presents an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)-based biosensor for the sensitive and selective detection of HPV-16 mutant DNA. A single-stranded DNA probe complementary to the target sequence was immobilized on a gold interdigitated electrode (G-IDE) modified with lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite LaSrCoFeO (LSCF) nanopowder to enhance charge transfer.

Considering previous studies on the high-pressure phases and compressibility of Ba-Au alloys with stoichiometries AuBa, AuBa, and AuBa, the concentration of the alkaline-earth metal Ba increased, and a particle-swarm optimization algorithm was employed to conduct comprehensive structure searches for the BaAu compound at 0, 10, 20, and 50 GPa. First-principles calculations were subsequently carried out to investigate its structural evolution and electronic properties under compression. Enthalpy-difference calculations indicate that the 4 phase of BaAu transforms to the phase at approximately 0.

This study aimed to compare the clinical durability, mechanical performance, and stress behavior of three NiTi rotary systems-BlueShaper (Blue), BlueShaper Pro (Dual Wire), and BlueShaper Gold (fully gold-treated NiTi)-through a multimodal evaluation that included simulated instrumentation in 3D-printed replicas, mechanical testing, and finite element analysis (FEA). Sixty instruments (n = 20 per group) were tested. Simulated canal preparation was conducted in standardized 3D-printed mandibular molars with a 40° mesial root curvature until fracture occurred.

Bacterial infection and the resulting inflammatory microenvironment are two critical factors to significantly inhibit tissue regeneration and even lead to wound deterioration. In this study, antisense oligonucleotides modified gold‑palladium alloy nanoparticles with hydrogen encapsulation (APDH) were prepared and then loaded in a biodegradable hyaluronic acid/alginate hydrogel to integratively inhibit bacteria and inflammation via cascaded photothermal therapy (PTT), photoinduced hydrogen therapy and gene-immunological therapy for infected wound repair. This nanocomposite hydrogel (HS@APDH) gradually decomposes in the infection microenvironment (low pH value and abundant hyaluronidase), thereby achieving continuous APDH release.

Digestive ripening has emerged as an outstanding solution-based methodology to obtain colloidal bimetallic nanomaterials with excellent control over their size and composition. Solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) in conjunction with digestive ripening has been used as a synthetic protocol to derive colloidal gold-silver nanoalloys. A comprehensive study has been carried out to elucidate the mechanistic pathways through which nanoalloying of gold and silver takes place via digestive ripening.
