High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is well-known for its cardioprotective effects, as it possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-thrombotic, and cytoprotective properties. Traditionally, studies and therapeutic approaches have focused on raising HDL cholesterol levels. Recently, it became evident that, not HDL cholesterol, but HDL composition and functionality, is probably a more fruitful target. In disorders, such as chronic kidney disease or cardiovascular diseases, it has been observed that HDL is modified and becomes dysfunctional. There are different modification that can occur, such as serum amyloid, an enrichment and oxidation, carbamylation, and glycation of key proteins. Additionally, the composition of HDL can be affected by changes to enzymes such as cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP), lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), and phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) or by modification to other important components. This review will highlight some main modifications to HDL and discuss whether these modifications are purely a consequential result of pathology or are actually involved in the pathology itself and have a causal role. Therefore, HDL composition may present a molecular target for the amelioration of certain diseases, but more information is needed to determine to what extent HDL modifications play a causal role in disease development.

Purpose: Although insulin resistance (IR) varies with age and puberty in children and adolescents, most previous attempts to determine cutoff values for IR indices overlook factor. This study assesses age-related differences in IR index values and evaluates how diagnostic performance varies by age when using a uniform cutoff for diagnosing metabolic syndrome (MetS) without considering age.
Methods: We analyzed age-related differences in IR indices (the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance [HOMA-IR], triglyceride-glucose [TyG] index, and triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [TG/HDL-C] ratio) among 1,641 participants in the 2019-2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Objectives: This study aims to assess periodontal and biochemical parameters and evaluate the salivary Protectin D1 levels in periodontitis patients with and without metabolic syndrome after non-surgical periodontal therapy.
Materials And Methods: Forty patients were categorized into two groups: 20 patients in Group P (systemically healthy patients with stage II/III grade B periodontitis) and 20 patients in Group P+MS (patients with stage II/III grade B periodontitis and metabolic syndrome). Parameters including age, gender, height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, socio-economic status, oral hygiene index (OHI), modified gingival index (MGI), probing pocket depth, clinical attachment levels, fasting blood glucose, HDL-c, total triglycerides, and blood pressure were recorded.

Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) imposes a significant economic and social burden on patients and their families. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is reported to have protective effects on cognitive function in older adults. This study assesses the effects of HDL-C during the acute period of stroke on PSCI.
