Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is caused by prions, infectious proteinaceous particles, PrP. We sequenced the gene of 2,899 white-tailed deer (WTD) from Illinois and southern Wisconsin, finding 38 haplotypes. Haplotypes A, B, D, E, G and 9 others encoded QGSNAQ, designated 'PrP variant A.' Haplotype C and 4 other haplotypes encoded PrP 'variant C' (QSSNAQ). Haplotype F and two other haplotypes encoded PrP 'variant F' (HGSNAQ). The association of CWD with encoded PrP variants was examined in 2,537 tested WTD from counties with CWD. Relative to PrP variant A, CWD susceptibility was lower in deer with PrP variant C ( = 0.26, < 0.001), and even lower in deer with PrP variant F ( = 0.10, < 0.0001). Susceptibility to CWD was highest in deer with both chromosomes encoding PrP variant A, lower with one copy encoding PrP variant A ( = 0.25, < 0.0001) and lowest in deer without PrP variant A ( = 0.07, < 0.0001). There appeared to be incomplete dominance for haplotypes encoding PrP variant C in reducing CWD susceptibility. Deer with both chromosomes encoding PrP variant F (FF) or one encoding PrP variant C and the other F (CF) were all CWD negative. Our results suggest that an increased population frequency of PrP variants C or F and a reduced frequency of PrP variant A may reduce the risk of CWD infection. Understanding the population and geographic distribution of polymorphisms may be a useful tool in CWD management.

Abiotic and biotic stress significantly limit crop yields. However, most stress-tolerance genes identified to date provide resistance to either biotic or abiotic stress and inhibit normal plant growth, limiting their application in breeding. We identified the soybean (Glycine max) NAC transcription factor gene GmST2, which is induced by salt and Botrytis cinerea stresses.

Rice, as a vital food crop, faces persistent challenges in breeding programs aimed at achieving stable high yield under environmental stresses due to intrinsic trade-off mechanisms. This study functionally characterizes NARROW AND LONGER GRAIN 14 (NLG14), which encodes a spermine synthase. Loss-of-function nlg14 mutants exhibit slender grains due to enhanced cell expansion and proliferation, alongside significantly improved grain quality-manifested as reduced chalkiness, lower amylose/protein content, higher gel consistency, and superior taste value.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic and debilitating disease with unknown cause. Involvement of infection and immune dysregulation has been suggested, including changes in immune cell subsets and abnormal functions of natural killer (NK) cells. The regulatory NK cell receptors, killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) have previously been investigated in small cohorts of ME/CFS patients with conflicting results regarding gene content.

This study aimed to investigate the potential association between the breeding values for somatic cell scores in milk (SCS) and polymorphisms in genes that encode for cytokines ( and ) and . These genes were selected because of their critical roles in immune regulation and their known involvement in mastitis-related inflammatory processes. To gain a comprehensive breeding perspective, the association study was conducted simultaneously with breeding values for productive traits in 558 Italian Simmental cows, a widespread dual-purpose dairy and beef bovine breed that is adaptable to harsh farming and breeding conditions.
