Small animals support a wide range of pathological phenotypes and genotypes as versatile, affordable models for pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases and for exploration of strategies in electrotherapy, gene therapy, and optogenetics. Pacing tools in such contexts are currently limited to tethered embodiments that constrain animal behaviors and experimental designs. Here, we introduce a highly miniaturized wireless energy-harvesting and digital communication electronics for thin, miniaturized pacing platforms weighing 110 mg with capabilities for subdermal implantation and tolerance to over 200,000 multiaxial cycles of strain without degradation in electrical or optical performance. Multimodal and multisite pacing in ex vivo and in vivo studies over many days demonstrate chronic stability and excellent biocompatibility. Optogenetic stimulation of cardiac cycles with in-animal control and induction of heart failure through chronic pacing serve as examples of modes of operation relevant to fundamental and applied cardiovascular research and biomedical technology.

Ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) is characterized by extensive intra-peritoneal dissemination and tumor heterogeneity. In the metastatic cascade, tumors utilize several transcriptional programs to translocate and survive in distant tissues. Here, we analyzed multi-modal, real-world data from 350 tumor samples across 160 patients with HGSC to identify transcriptional programs that drive intra-peritoneal metastasis and heterogeneity.

Background: The integration of large-scale genomic and multimodal data is critical to advancing oncology research. However, challenges related to data storage, sharing, and governance hinder its effective use. We share experience from conducting a multi-site, cross-industry UK project utilising large-scale genomic data obtained from tissue and liquid biopsies from patients with cancer, to produce recommendations for enabling and optimising the use of multimodal data in oncology research.

Understanding the mechanisms behind (mal)adaptive stress responses is crucial for addressing stress-related mental disorders, which remain leading contributors to global disability and mortality. However, individual differences in stress responses present a challenge for single studies due to limited sample sizes. Multi-site studies can overcome this by increasing statistical power and generalizability, but it remains unclear whether even optimally harmonized procedures can ensure cross-site comparability.

Pain management in multiple trauma patients presents a complex clinical challenge due to competing priorities such as hemodynamic instability, polypharmacy, coagulopathy, and the urgency of life-saving interventions. In this context, peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) are increasingly recognized as a valuable asset for their role in managing pain in patients with multiple traumatic injuries. By reducing reliance on systemic opioids, PNBs support effective pain control and facilitate early mobilization, aligning with enhanced recovery principles.
