Traps baited with female-produced sex pheromones have been very effective in the monitoring and management of mirid bugs in numerous field trials. However, none of the target odorant receptors for sex pheromone components in Apolygus lucorum have been identified. Here, we identified one candidate sex pheromone receptor, AlucOR4, from A. lucorum. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) analysis revealed that AlucOR4 was antennae-enriched and male-biased in adult A. lucorum. Xenopus oocyte expression system assays demonstrated that AlucOR4/AlucOrco was sensitive to two major sex pheromone constituents and exhibited high sensitivity to (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate (E2HB) and lower sensitivity to hexyl butyrate (HB). The expression level of target mRNA was significantly reduced (>80%) in dsAlucOR4-injected bugs after five days. The electroantennogram (EAG) responses of male antennae to E2HB and HB were also reduced significantly (~40%). Our findings suggest that AlucOR4 is essential to sex pheromone perception in A. lucorum.

Mosquito-borne diseases pose significant public health challenges, necessitating the development of effective and sustainable vector control strategies. This study investigated the feeding preferences of 4 mosquito species (Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, Aedes albopictus Skuse, Culex quinquefasciatus Say, and Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say) for various fruit juices using a home-made choice chamber. We also assessed the impact of combining biogents lure and boric acid into attractive toxic sugar baits to enhance mosquito attraction and mortality.

Background: Spodoptera frugiperda and Mythimna loreyi are sympatric pests of corn and other gramineous crops. In addition, the two species share three primary pheromone components Z9-14:Ac, Z7-12:Ac and Z11-16:Ac, resulting in capture of males from both species by commercially available lures, which poses a great challenge for species-specific population monitoring.
Results: To increase the specificity of the pheromone blend used in lures, we conducted comparative investigations between the two species, with respect of female calling rhythms, components in female pheromone glands, male electrophysiological and sexual excitement responses to pheromone gland components.

In our previous study, we generated a membrane-type progesterone receptor γ (paqr5b) knockout zebrafish line. Knocking out paqr5b by genome editing resulted in the loss of neurons in the olfactory rosette (OR). These findings indicated that Paqr5b plays an essential role in the formation of olfactory neurons.
