The structure and function of the skin relies on the complex expression pattern and organisation of extracellular matrix macromolecules, of which collagens are a principal component. The fibrillar collagens, types I and III, constitute over 90% of the collagen content within the skin and are the major determinants of the strength and stiffness of the tissue. However, the minor collagens also play a crucial regulatory role in a variety of processes, including cell anchorage, matrix assembly, and growth factor signalling. In this article, we review the expression patterns, key functions and involvement in disease pathogenesis of the minor collagens found in the skin. While it is clear that the minor collagens are important mediators of normal tissue function, homeostasis and repair, further insight into the molecular level structure and activity of these proteins is required for translation into clinical therapies.

Cell and tissue engineering therapies provide promise for regenerating damaged intervertebral disc (IVD) tissue and resolving the low back pain that often accompanies it. However, these treatments remain experimental and unavailable for patients. Furthermore, the large body of work characterizing and utilizing mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) for these applications has, unfortunately, not resulted in any FDA-approved spinal therapies.

Introduction: Anastomotic leak (AL) is a serious complication in colorectal surgery, associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Technological advances have yet to eliminate AL, which occurs from 5% to 14% of cases involving anastomosis. This study introduces and evaluates a new collagen-cyanoacrylate patch designed to externally reinforce colonic anastomoses with the aim to contain anastomotic leaks.

Objective: The myodural bridge complex (MDBC) is a tendon-like structure highly conserved during vertebrate evolution, suggesting it plays an important physiological role. Substantial evidence indicates that the MDBC may contribute to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation by generating mechanical force. Studying its developmental process may offer new insights into CSF dynamics and lead to improved strategies for diagnosing and treating neurodegenerative diseases.

In this study, nanofibrous scaffolds composed of Polycaprolactone/Collagen (PCL/COL) infused with FeO/Lanthanum/SiO nanocomposite were developed. FeO and La-doped FeO nanoparticles were synthesized using a straightforward co-precipitation method. Silica extracted from Ulmus leaves via green synthesis was used to coat the FeO-La nanocomposite.

Alport syndrome is a hereditary glomerular disease driven by pathogenic variants in COL4A3-COL4A5 that compromise the α3-α4-α5 type IV collagen scaffold, manifesting as persistent hematuria, proteinuria, and ultimately end-stage renal disease. Its pronounced phenotypic variability, low sensitivity of renal biopsy, and limited response to ACE inhibitors complicate accurate diagnosis and therapy. In a cohort of 40 pedigrees from southwest China, we discovered 21 novel COL4A3-COL4A5 mutations.
