Article Abstract

Boron is an essential plant micronutrient that plays a structural role in the rhamnogalacturonan II component of the pectic cell wall. To prevent boron deficiency under limiting conditions, its uptake, distribution, and homeostasis are mediated by boric acid transporters and channel proteins. Among the membrane channels that facilitate boric acid uptake are the type II nodulin intrinsic protein (NIP) subfamily of aquaporin-like proteins. Arabidopsis () possesses three NIP II genes (, , and ) that show distinct tissue expression profiles (predominantly expressed in roots, stem nodes, and developing flowers, respectively). Orthologs of each are represented in all dicots. Here, we show that purified and reconstituted NIP7;1 is a boric acid facilitator. By using native promoter-reporter fusions, we show that NIP7;1 is expressed predominantly in anthers of young flowers in a narrow developmental window, floral stages 9 and 10, with protein accumulation solely within tapetum cells, where it is localized to the plasma membrane. Under limiting boric acid conditions, loss-of-function T-DNA mutants ( and ) show reduced fertility, including shorter siliques and an increase in aborted seeds, compared with the wild type. Under these conditions, mutant pollen grains show morphological defects, increased aggregation, defective exine cell wall formation, reduced germination frequency, and decreased viability. During stages 9 and 10, the tapetum is essential for supplying materials to the pollen microspore cell wall. We propose that NIP7;1 serves as a gated boric acid channel in developing anthers that aids in the uptake of this critical micronutrient by tapetal cells.

The rheological behavior of ulvan/kappa-carrageenan, ulvan/funoran and ulvan/gelatin mixtures is investigated using dynamic rheology to provide insights into the phase aggregation behavior of each ulvan-based network. The average molecular weight of extracted ulvan was between 436 and 573 kDa, and contained varying amounts of sulfate (10.3-28.

Mosquito-borne diseases pose significant public health challenges, necessitating the development of effective and sustainable vector control strategies. This study investigated the feeding preferences of 4 mosquito species (Aedes aegypti Linnaeus, Aedes albopictus Skuse, Culex quinquefasciatus Say, and Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say) for various fruit juices using a home-made choice chamber. We also assessed the impact of combining biogents lure and boric acid into attractive toxic sugar baits to enhance mosquito attraction and mortality.

The Emet boric acid production plant in Türkiye produces boric acid from the reaction of colemanite (CaBO·5HO) with sulphuric acid (HSO). Sulphate, arsenic (III + V) and boron are released with the plant wastewater to the wastewater dam. This study aims to treat this boric acid production plant wastewater using calcium hydroxide in a batch reactor.

The traditional analysis methods for fluoride ions, including potentiometric titration and chromatography, suffer from issues such as complex analysis processes, high costs, and long duration. Here, a typical nanocomposite, consisting of an iron metal-organic framework (MIL-100(Fe)) with surface defects and graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN), has been successfully developed through regulation by 3-aminophenylboric acid, specifically for the fabrication of fluoride ion sensors. The electrochemical behavior of fluoride ions was investigated using the modified electrode via differential pulse voltammetry.
