Article Abstract

The atomic structures of self-assembled silicon nanoribbons and magic clusters on Ag(110) substrate have been studied by high-resolution noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). Pentagon-ring structures in Si nanoribbons and clusters have been directly visualized. Moreover, the vibrational fingerprints of individual Si nanoribbon and cluster retrieved by subnanometer resolution TERS confirm the pentagonal nature of both Si nanoribbons and clusters. This work demonstrates that Si pentagon can be an important element in building silicon nanostructures, which may find important applications for future nanoelectronic devices based on silicon.

Inverted Follicular Keratosis of the Lower Eyelid-A Diagnostic Conundrum.

Ann Plast Surg

Division of Onco-pathology, Department of Pathology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, India.

Background: Ulceroproliferative lesions involving the eyelids can be due to several causes, chief among them being squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It is imperative to distinguish it from various mimics owing to the limited surgical therapy that can be offered at the site. Inverted follicular keratosis (IFK) is a rare benign epidermal tumor that arises from the infundibular portion of the hair follicle.

Scandium(III) (Sc(III)) is the smallest among the trivalent ions in Group 3, which includes yttrium(III) and lanthanides (III) with a hydration number of 8 and 8-9, respectively. The hydration number of Sc(III) in aqueous solutions reported so far varies from six to ten and remains an open question. In general, applying pressure and temperature to aqueous solutions perturbs the water structure and ion solvation, providing insight into the nature of ion solvation.

Regulating spin polarization has been recognized as a promising strategy to improve the catalytic performance across various catalytic domains, since the reaction barriers can be directly influenced by the spin state. However, the existing approaches to modulating the spin polarization of active centers mainly focus on the metal-based catalysts, and those for the earth-abundant carbon-based metal-free catalysts (CMFCs) are rarely reported. Here, a topological defect engineering strategy is proposed to regulate the spin polarization by introducing pentagon defects on the edge of CMFCs.

The synthesis of nonalternant graphene nanoribbons (GNRs)-carbon-based nanostructures featuring fused pentagonal or heptagonal rings that disrupt hexagonal symmetry-has remained a significant challenge despite their unique electronic properties, such as tunable bandgaps and topological states. Unlike conventional alternant hydrocarbons (e.g.

Highly Selective and Sensitive Resistive and Schottky Diode Sensor for Nitrogen-Containing Gas Based on Monolayer Penta-HgO.

Langmuir

September 2025

College of Physics and Electronic Information Engineering, Key Laboratory of Low-dimensional Structural Physics and Application, Education Department of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guilin University of Technology, Guilin 541004, PR China.

Highly sensitive and reusable sensors for detecting harmful gas molecules are particularly important to reduce their harmful impacts on human health and the natural environment. Based on the density functional theory calculations, the adsorption properties and sensing performances of the monolayer penta-HgO material for nitrogen-containing toxic gas molecules (NO, NH, NO, and NO) were thoroughly explored. The adsorptions of NH, NO, and NO (NO) on the monolayer penta-HgO substrate are characterized by high (low) adsorption energy, significant (little) charge transfer, and short (long) adsorption distance, showing chemisorption (physisorption) properties.
