Native mass spectrometry can provide insight into the structure of macromolecular biological systems. As analytes under investigation get larger and more complex, instrument capabilities need to be advanced. Herein, modifications to an Orbitrap Q Exactive Plus mass spectrometer that increase signal intensity, mass resolution, and maximum m/z measurable are described.

Marine vessels play a vital role in the global economy; however, their negative impact on the marine atmospheric environment is a growing concern. Quantifying marine vessel emissions is an essential prerequisite for controlling these emissions and improving the marine atmospheric environment. Optical imaging remote sensing is a vital technique for quantifying marine vessel emissions.

An integrated miniature time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) system coupled with a pocket-size 3D-printed laser-induced acoustic desorption (LIAD) source is described. This 3D-printed LIAD source utilizes only a miniature deceleration motor to achieve two-dimensional motion of the target surface, simplifying the source structure and improving the long-term stability of mass spectrometry measurements. It has been successfully applied to analyze the model molecule creatinine and ingredients in an energy beverage (Red Bull), where main natural nutrients were clearly identified.

Exposure to air pollution plays a significant role in human health. Current methods of measuring human exposure are often limited to outdoor measurements, are time intensive, or are unable to accurately measure certain classes of compounds. This study proposes human hair as a promising indicator of pollution exposure.

The chemical profile of brown algae Ecklonia cava was comprehensively analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometer and GNPS molecular networking, identifying 33 components, including 27 oligomeric phloroglucinols. Among these, 10 compounds with analogous structural segments were evaluated for β-glucuronidase inhibitory activity, revealing potent inhibition by eckol, phlorofucofuroeckol A (PFF-A), dieckol, 2-phloroeckol, dioxinodehydroeckol (DHE), 8,8'-bieckol, and 6,8'-bieckol, with IC values ranging from 0.3 to 30.

Food contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), especially ultra-short-chain (USC) compounds, poses a growing concern due to their environmental persistence and potential health risks. Despite the developing regulatory framework, analytical challenges persist in quantifying polar USC-PFAS in complex content food matrices. This study presents the development and validation of a novel high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS/MS) method for the accurate determination of USC-PFAS (carbon chain length from one to four, C1-C4) in tomato-based products (i.
