Article Abstract

An inexpensive and compact frequency multi-mode diode laser enables a compact two-photon polarization entanglement source via the continuous wave broadband pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process. Entanglement degradation caused by polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the critical issues in optical fiber-based polarization entanglement distribution. We theoretically and experimentally investigate how the initial entanglement is degraded when the two-photon polarization entangled state undergoes PMD. We report an effect of PMD unique to broadband pumped SPDC, equally applicable to pulsed pumping as well as cw broadband pumping, which is that the amount of the entanglement degradation is asymmetrical to the PMD introduced to each quantum channel. We believe that our results have important applications in long-distance distribution of polarization entanglement via optical fiber channels.

Optically pumped polymer nanolasers drive the development of integrated optoelectronic devices. Introduction of surface plasmon into nanolasers can effectively enhance the local electromagnetic field in the optical pumping processes. However, significant quenching effects on organic fluorescence emissions bring the challenge in high-efficient lasing from the distributed feedback (DFB) nano-device loaded with noble metal particles.

We report on the development of a cladding-pumped ultra-broadband optical amplifier for a spectral region of 1260-1480 nm using a Bi-doped fiber (BDF) with heterogeneous core formed by combination of PO- and GeO-containing glass layers. This BDF design ensures a favorable local environment for the effective formation process of BACs associated with P and Si atoms. The BDF amplifier (BDFA) pumped into the cladding by multi-mode laser diodes at 793 and 808 nm is characterized by a peak gain of ≈24 dB, a minimum noise figure of ≈6 dB, and a bandwidth of ≈160 nm at a gain level of 20 dB.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has emerged as a promising strategy to produce freshwater seawater desalination. While cellulose-based photothermal materials have garnered significant attention in solar steam generation, conventional surface modification techniques (, coating and carbonization) often suffer from cumbersome preparation and limited design flexibility. This study pioneers a non-destructive laser-processing strategy to simultaneously induce spatially controlled graphene domains and iron oxide nanostructures on chemically modified cellulose matrices.

Measuring the neurodevelopmental trajectory of excitatory-inhibitory balance via visual gamma oscillations.

Disruption of the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission (E-I balance) is thought to underlie many neurodevelopmental disorders; however, its study is typically restricted to adults, animal models, and the lab-bench. Neurophysiological oscillations in the gamma frequency band relate closely to E-I balance, and a new technology-OPM-MEG-offers the possibility to measure such signals across the lifespan. We used OPM-MEG to measure gamma oscillations induced by visual stimulation in 101 participants, aged 2-34 years.

High-power 0.9 µm lasers have garnered significant interest due to their potential applications in laser pumping and blue-green light generation. However, as one of the promising implementation methods, the Nd-doped fiber (NDF) lasers have only recently reached a hundred-watt-level output power at 0.
