Article Abstract

Facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) has been proposed as a sexually dimorphic signal in humans that develops under the influence of pubertal testosterone (T); however, no studies have examined the association between fWHR and T during the phase in which facial growth is canalized--adolescence. In a sample of adolescent Tsimane males, we evaluate the relationship between T, known T-derived traits (i.e. strength and voice pitch), and craniofacial measurements. If fWHR variation derives from T's effect on craniofacial growth during adolescence, several predictions should be supported: 1) fWHR should increase with age as T increases, 2) fWHR should reflect adolescent T (rather than adult T per se), 3) fWHR should exhibit velocity changes during adolescence in parallel with the pubertal spurt in T, 4) fWHR should correlate with T after controlling for age and other potential confounds, and 5) fWHR should show strong associations with other T-derived traits. Only prediction 4 was observed. Additionally, we examined three alternative facial masculinity ratios: facial width/lower face height, cheekbone prominence, and facial width/full face height. In contrast to fWHR, all three alternative measures show a strong age-related trend and are associated with both T and T-dependent traits. Overall, our results question the status of fWHR as a sexually-selected signal of pubertal T and T-linked traits.

Perceivers rely on men's facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) as the basis of several stereotypes about men's proclivities as parents. High-fWHR men are perceived as especially prone toward disciplining their offspring. Nonetheless, such ascriptions may vary across different racial categories based on concomitant parenting stereotypes for different cultures.

Background: Although there is an interaction between sex, body fat distribution, and cardiac structure and function, these relationships have not been fully elucidated yet. This study aims to reveal the causal relationship between genetic determinants of fat distribution pattern and function of the left ventricular structure in different sexes.

Methods: Genetic variants for waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and body mass index (BMI) were selected from genome-wide association studies conducted in European samples.

Sustainable remediation of Cd-contaminated farmland through the rotation of rapeseed-rice varieties with different Cd accumulation potentials.

In response to the safety risks posed by cadmium (Cd)-contaminated rice fields worldwide, a suitable production-and-restoration strategy is required for actual agricultural practices. To investigate the remediation effects of different accumulation varieties in rapeseed-rice cropping systems and their influence on Cd migration and transportation, field experiments were conducted based on different planting combinations (FWHR, conventional rice variety (HR) monoculture under fallow; FWLR, low Cd-accumulating rice variety (LR) monoculture under fallow; LOLR, LO (low Cd-accumulating rapeseed variety)-LR rotation; LOHR, LO-HR rotation; HOLR, HO (high Cd-accumulating rapeseed variety)-LR rotation; HOHR, HO-HR rotation). The study found that a rapeseed and rice rotation with appropriate varieties could reduce the rice grain Cd content, increase rice yield, and remove soil Cd without affecting agricultural production efficiency.

Objectives: Facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) has been widely investigated in the context of its role in visual communication, though there is a lack of consensus about how fWHR serves as a social signal. To better understand fWHR variation in a comparative context, we investigate the associations between fWHR and canine crown height (CCH) and body mass, respectively, among two chimpanzee subspecies (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii, Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus).

Materials And Methods: We collected landmark data from 3D surface models of 86 Pan cranial specimens to quantify fWHR and upper CCH, and to estimate body mass.

The Role of Neurotoxins and Fillers in Affirmative Care in Gender Nonconforming Filipino Patients.

J Clin Aesthet Dermatol

May 2024

Drs. Yu and Sison are with the Skin and Cancer Foundation, Inc., in Pasig, Philippines.

Objective: Gender nonconformity refers to individuals whose gender identity, roles, or expressions do not adhere to societal standards and norms. Affirmative care is an approach to healthcare delivery in which organizations, programs, and providers recognize, validate, and support the identity stated or expressed by the individuals served. This study examined the effects of nonsurgical interventions performed by dermatologists, specifically botulinum toxins (BoNTA) and dermal filler injections, on the physical and mental health of Filipino gender nonconforming individuals.
