Article Abstract

The Aerodyne Mobile Laboratory was deployed to the Houston Ship Channel and surrounding areas during the Benzene and Other Toxics Exposure field study in February 2015. We evaluated atmospheric concentrations of volatile organic hydrocarbons and other hazardous air pollutants of importance to human health, including benzene, 1,3-butadiene, toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzenes, styrene, and NO2. Ambient concentration measurements were focused on the neighborhoods of Manchester, Harrisburg, and Galena Park. The most likely measured concentration of 1,3-butadiene in the Manchester neighborhood (0.17 ppb) exceeds the Environmental Protection Agency's E-5 lifetime cancer risk level of 0.14 ppb. In all the three neighborhoods, the measured benzene concentration falls below or within the E-5 lifetime cancer risk levels of 0.4-1.4 ppb for benzene. Pollution maps as a function of wind direction show the impact of nearby sources.

Concentration-specific effects of micropollutants on microbial communities and antibiotic resistance genes in activated sludge systems.

J Hazard Mater

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Water Pollution Control and Green Resource Recycling, School of Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, China. Electronic address:

Micropollutants are widespread in wastewater systems and can impact microbial communities and the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Nevertheless, the specific concentration thresholds for these effects under environmental conditions remain largely unknown. This study evaluated six micropollutants at five environmentally relevant concentrations (0.

The global spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to public health, with hospital wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) recognized as a key hotspot for resistant pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study employed advanced hybrid sequencing platforms to provide a comprehensive resistomic analysis of a Qingdao WWTP in China, revealing previously uncovered AMR transmission risks. We identified 175 ARG subtypes conferring resistance to 38 antimicrobials, including the last-resort antibiotics, highlighting the extensive and concerning resistance reservoir within this environment.

Agro-Food Technology and Quality Laboratory, Regional Center of Agricultural Research of Meknes, National Institute of Agricultural Research, Rabat, Morocco. Electronic address:

The composition of the injection solvent is a critical, yet often underestimated, parameter in liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This study systematically evaluates the influence of injection solvent on the analysis of 90 pesticides by comparing mixtures of acetonitrile (ACN) with water and buffered mobile phase A (5 mM ammonium formate, 0.1% formic acid) across various ratios (10/90 to 50/50, v/v).

Beyond top-hit nontarget screening: Diagnostic fragment analysis reveals nitrogen-containing heterocycles in iron and steel industry wastewater.

Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (NHCs), widely present in industrial wastewater, pose significant environmental and health risks, yet their identification and characterization remain poorly understood. Herein, we developed a diagnostic fragment list comprising 20 nitrogen-containing fragments for NHCs, by integrating chemical information from Pubchem with the NIST mass spectral library. Leveraging this list, we employed a diagnostic fragment-assisted nontarget screening approach and identified 151 NHCs in iron and steel industry wastewater.
