The aquaporins (AQPs) make up a family of integral membrane proteins that control cellular water flow. Gating of the water channel by conformational changes induced by phosphorylation or protein-protein interactions is an established regulatory mechanism for AQPs. Recent in silico and crystallographic analyses of the structural biology of AQPs suggest that the rate of water flow can also be controlled by small movements of single-amino acid side chains lining the water pore. Here we use measurements of the membrane water permeability of mammalian cells expressing AQP4 mutants to provide the first in vitro evidence in support of this hypothesis.

The scalable fabrication of high performance dyes desalination loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane through facile thermal annealing remains challenging due to the susceptible pore collapse. Herein, we have developed a metal ion mediated sub-Tg thermal crosslinking protocol, which can convert the phase inverted reactive polymeric ultrafiltration substrate into LNF membrane showing high permselectivity as well as resistance to both extremely acid and alkaline solution. The original ultrafiltration substrate was composed of scalable-produced reactive polyarylene ether amidoxime (PEA) that was pre-crosslinked with ferric ions.

Shiga toxin (Stx) is a virulence factor produced by serotype 1 and Stx-producing (STEC). It causes severe renal damage, leading to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The main target organ of Stx, the kidney, plays a role in maintaining water homeostasis in the body by increasing an osmotic gradient from the cortex to the medulla.

Seeds of Sophora japonica in Nanjing during the recommended period typically exhibit permeable seed coats. It is imperative to comprehend the water absorption characteristics of the permeable seeds, as water uptake represents a critical step in seed germination. This study employed an integrated approach combining blocking experiments, scanning electron microscopy, staining tests, and magnetic resonance imaging to investigate water entry sites and movement patterns in permeable seeds.

This study explores the use of plant-derived polysaccharides to develop bio-based films for food-packaging applications. A film-forming solution composed of Prosopis nigra biopolymer (PN-B), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and glycerol was optimized by central composite design (CCD), resulting in two formulations: P1 and P11. The films were subsequently functionalized with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized via chemical and biological routes.

Fresh walnuts are prone to moisture loss and spoilage after harvest, leading to reduced appearance and sensory quality. In this study, a multifunctional chitosan (CS)-based film was fabricated by incorporating a bacterial cellulose/oregano essential oil (BC/OEO) Pickering emulsion, with hydrogen bonding promoting cohesive matrix integration. The film's physicochemical properties, along with its antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, were systematically evaluated.
