Article Abstract

The number and mass concentration, size distribution, and the concentration of 16 elements were studied in aerosol samples during the Spring Festival celebrations in 2013 in Beijing, China. Both the number and mass concentration increased sharply in a wide range from 10 nm to 10 μm during the firecrackers and fireworks activities. The prominent increase of the number concentration was in 50 nm-500 nm with a peak of 1.7 × 10(5)/cm(3) at 150 nm, which is 8 times higher than that after 1.5 h. The highest mass concentration was in 320-560 nm, which is 4 times higher than the control. K, Mg, Sr, Ba and Pb increased sharply during the firework activities in PM10. Although the aerosol emission from firework activities is a short-term air quality degradation event, there may be a substantial hazard arising from the chemical composition of the emitted particles.

Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4), the circulating carrier of retinol, complexes with transthyretin (TTR) and is a potential biomarker of cardiometabolic disease. However, RBP4 quantitation relies on immunoassays and Western blots without retinol and TTR measurement. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous absolute quantitation of circulating RBP4 and TTR is critical to establishing their biomarker potential.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a persistent organic pollutant with toxic effects on human health and ecosystems. In this study, the performance of MWCNT-OH functionalized with iron nanoparticles (MWCNT-OH@Fe) using sugarcane bagasse extract as a reducing agent (green synthesis) was evaluated for BPA adsorption. The kinetics are fast, between 10 and 20 min in the range of concentrations evaluated and the resistance to external film diffusion (external film mass transfer) identified as the rate-limiting step of the process.

Adulterated yohimbine (YHB) in food poses a risk to public health, making it imperative to develop fast and sensitive detection methods. In this study, computational-chemistry-based prediction was employed to design YHB haptens for generating the high-affinity monoclonal antibody Yohi-4A7, which exhibited an optimal half-inhibitory concentration (IC) of 1.69 ng/mL against YHB.

Aim     To determine the prevalence and predictors for the development of newly diagnosed chronic heart failure (CHF) in patients with shortness of breath in long-term post-COVID syndrome.Material and methods            This screening cross-sectional clinical study was performed from April 2020 through April 2024, in two stages in an outpatient setting. At the first stage, 878 patients with shortness of breath were screened three or more months after COVID-19, and the presence of at least three diagnostic criteria for CHF, that were not in their history, was verified.

Background: Stored-product insects (Sitophilus spp., Plodia interpunctella, Sitotroga cerealella) drive substantial postharvest losses and increasingly resist synthetic fumigants. Valeriana wallichii roots yield volatile oils rich in short-chain acids and sesquiterpenes.
