Resting cells of Arthrobacter simplex with 1-en-dehydrogenation ability were prepared and treated by ethanol at subinhibitory concentrations (4%-15%, v/v), then added into the ethanol-free system containing low concentration of cortisone acetate (1 g L(-1)) to produce prednisone acetate by C1,2 dehydrogenation reaction. Results showed that, within the range of ethanol concentration, the initial conversion rate was varied significantly with the concentration of ethanol and the maximum was obtained at 8% (v/v) ethanol, which was increased by 32.6% compared with the control. A series of cell features closely relevant to biotransformation efficiency were further analyzed. It indicated that ethanol acting on cell wall and membrane could be used as a mediator to enhance cell permeability, which facilitated the penetration of substrate across cell barrier within a short time, resulting in the elevated initial conversation rate. The observation of fatty acids composition suggested that the increased unsaturated fatty acids, especially cis-isomers, in the presence of ethanol led to the disorganization of the native arrangement of lipids and thus increased cell permeability. Our findings demonstrated that another facilitation of ethanol was to promote substrate transport into cells by permeabilization, which would provide the guidance in the practical application of organic solvents in steroid biotransformation.

Understanding the evaporation mechanism of liquid ethanol and ethanol-water binary mixtures is important for numerous scientific and industrial processes. The amount of water in liquid water-ethanol mixtures can significantly affect how quickly ethanol molecules evaporate. Here, we study the mechanism and rate of evaporation of ethanol from pure liquid ethanol and ethanol/water binary mixtures through both unbiased molecular dynamics simulations and biased simulations using the umbrella sampling method.

The contamination of dental curing light tips was evaluated before and after treatment and after their use and disinfection. The influence of a plastic protective barrier over the flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity of resin composites were also analyzed. Microbiological sampling was conducted at initial contamination (T0), in Log 10 CFU/4 mL; after dental treatment (T1); and after disinfection with 70% ethanol (v/v) (T2).

Polar protic and aprotic solvents can effectively simulate the maturation of breast carcinoma cells. Herein, the influence of polar protic solvents (water and ethanol) and aprotic solvents (acetone and DMSO) on the properties of 3-(dimethylaminomethyl)-5-nitroindole (DAMNI) was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) computations. Thermodynamic parameters retrieved from the vibrational analysis indicated that the DAMNI's entropy, heat capacity, and enthalpy increased with rising temperature.

FGF21 is a hormone secreted from the liver in response to various nutritional stressors, suggested to be acting to balance dietary intake through negative feedback regulation. This meal study aimed to investigate two different potential nutrient interactions on postprandial FGF21 secretion in healthy human participants: 1) between intake of alcohol and protein and 2) between intake of alcohol and vitamin A (retinol). In a 4-arm, randomized, double-blinded, cross-over meal study (NCT06105476), postprandial circulating concentrations of FGF21, glucose, insulin, ethanol, and acetate were compared after intake of four different test drinks containing alcohol, alcohol+protein, alcohol+retinol or retinol in 27 healthy humans.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a persistent organic pollutant with toxic effects on human health and ecosystems. In this study, the performance of MWCNT-OH functionalized with iron nanoparticles (MWCNT-OH@Fe) using sugarcane bagasse extract as a reducing agent (green synthesis) was evaluated for BPA adsorption. The kinetics are fast, between 10 and 20 min in the range of concentrations evaluated and the resistance to external film diffusion (external film mass transfer) identified as the rate-limiting step of the process.
