Methcillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged as an important cause of community-acquired infections, which has been recently designated as community-associated (CA) MRSA. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-negative multilocus sequence type 72 (ST72)-staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type IV has been reported as the predominat CA-MRSA strain in Korea and is commonly associated with skin and soft tissue infections in addition to healthcare-associated pneumonia. However, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) for this strain has not yet been reported. We hereby report two cases of CAP caused by PVL-negative ST72-SCCmec type IV strain in patients who had no risk factors for MRSA acquisition. While CA-MRSA infections are not yet prevalent in Korea, our cases suggest that CA-MRSA should be considered in cases of severe CAP, especially for cases associated with necrotizing pneumonia.

Red yeast rice (RYR), a commonly used supplement with statin-like properties, is generally considered safe but may cause severe adverse effects such as rhabdomyolysis. We report a rare case of severe RYR-induced rhabdomyolysis complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI) and respiratory failure, with diaphragmatic dysfunction as a key contributing factor. A 78-year-old woman developed progressive proximal muscle weakness, dyspnea, and tea-colored urine after taking RYR (2 g/day) for 1 month.

This report describes highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) H5N1 infections in carnivores in Alaska, US between 2022 and 2024, including a black bear (Ursus americanus), a brown bear (Ursus arctos), and the first known report of HPAI in an ermine (Mustela ermina). The two bears were cubs, and the ermine was a young adult. The black bear and ermine were euthanized after demonstrating neurologic signs, including circling, blindness, ataxia, or seizures.

The neonatal period is a critical stage for microbial colonization and immune system development, with dynamic changes in the microbiome closely linked to the pathogenesis of various diseases. Traditional microbiological testing methods have low sensitivity and time-consuming limitations compared to metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), which makes it difficult to meet the diagnostic and therapeutic needs of critically ill neonates. mNGS analyzes the total DNA in a sample without bias, allowing comprehensive identification of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and resolution of functional genes, providing new avenues for precision diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as neonatal sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, neonatal pneumonia, neonatal meningitis, neonatal jaundice, and other diseases.

Background: Pyogenic liver abscesses are a fatal condition often seen in emergency departments. The major clinical presentations include weakness, anorexia, fever, chills, ventosity and abdominal pain. They occur in immunocompromised individuals who suffer from diabetes mellitus, malignant tumors, hepatocirrhosis, kidney failure, and solid organ transplantation, or those with long-term administration of glucocorticoids.
