Article Abstract

Herein, we report the synthesis of three covalently linked superparamagnetic nanocrystal-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites. A generic strategy for amphiphilic polymer coating of nanocrystals and further functionalization for amide bond formation with the MWCNTs is discussed. This approach can in principle allow attachment of any colloidal nanocrystal to the MWCNTs. The materials were characterized at each stage of the syntheses using DLS, zeta-potential measurements, FT-IR, TEM, and XPS techniques. The practicality of this linkage is demonstrated by the reversible magnetic immobilization of these materials on an electrode during non-aqueous electrochemistry.

Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are amphiphilic polymers that are used extensively in consumer products and PEGylated biotherapeutics. Although PEGs are considered biologically inert with a low toxicity, anti-PEG antibodies have been detected in patients receiving treatment with PEGylated biotherapeutics as well as in healthy individuals. Despite continual exposure in daily life, the prevalence of PEGs within the general population remains unclear.

Many membrane proteins, including G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), are susceptible to denaturation when extracted from their native membrane by detergents. Therefore, alternative methods have been developed, including amphiphilic copolymers that enable the direct extraction of functional membrane proteins along with their surrounding lipids. Among these amphiphilic copolymers, styrene/maleic acid (SMA) and diisobutylene/maleic acid (DIBMA) polymers have been extensively studied.

Sulforaphene (SFE) is a bioactive isothiocyanate, known for its cancer-preventive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, the application of SFE is severely limited by its poor stability. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), an amphiphilic carbohydrate polymer, has potentials to enhance the stability of SFE and the loading capacity.

Enhancing singlet oxygen generation for photosensitizers in aqueous media can markedly improve the efficacy of photochemical therapy. Herein, triblock polymers composed of pyropheophorbide a photosensitizer (PPa), polyethylene glycol, and phospholipid are synthesized. These triblock polymers, driven by hydrophilic-hydrophobic interactions, spontaneously fold into an amphiphilic structure and further self-assemble into nanomicelles.

Mild photothermal therapy effectively reduces hyperthermia-related tissue injuries; however, its low therapeutic efficiency presents a significant limitation. Herein, we developed an organic multifunctional photothermal platform with enhanced Fenton catalytic activity to increase tumor sensitivity to mild photothermal therapy. This platform incorporated a self-augmented Fenton molecule integrating carbonic anhydrase inhibitor and ferrocene, which was co-encapsulated with the photothermal agent IR 825 via an amphiphilic polymer.
