Atomically thin 2D layered ferroelectric semiconductors, where polarization switching transpires within the channel material itself, are pivotal to advancing the next generation of high-performance electronics. Nevertheless, the challenge remains in either the controllable synthesis of films or the manipulation of associated ferroelectricity. Here, 2D p-type BiCuSeO (BCSO) films with a thickness down to ≈3 nm are successfully synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy.

Background: Endophthalmitis is an ophthalmologic emergency requiring accurate and rapid diagnosis for treatment. Currently, the diagnosis commonly relies on culture and molecular biology, which falls short of clinical rapid diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a self-build Microfluidic Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) System for rapidly identifying potential pathogens of endophthalmitis.

To elucidate the mechanisms of angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGTPL4) in neovascularization (NV) in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We compared ANGPTL4 expression levels of aqueous humour and vitreous fluid samples in infants with acute-phase ROP and control group. ANGPTL4 mice and WT mice were used to constructed oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) mouse models, with retinal tissues collected on postnatal days 12 (P12), 15 (P15) and 17 (P17).

Background: The role of quorum sensing signaling in the immunoinflammatory response during the development of periodontitis is not yet known. This study aimed to explore the effect of Autoinducer-2, a quorum sensing signaling molecule, on macrophage phenotypic remodeling in the immune microenvironment of periodontitis, to further elucidate its mechanism and to discover inhibitors against periodontitis.

Methods: Bioluminescence experiments and periodontitis model were used to demonstrate the association between periodontitis progression with AI-2.

Although solid polymer electrolytes have been developed for several decades, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) or polymers with ethoxy (EO) segments are still one of the most promising candidates for advanced batteries. The low ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transference number as well as the deterioration of mechanical properties after coupling with lithium salts restrict its further adoption. Herein, a serial of PEO-based composite electrolytes optimized by waterborne polyurethane are prepared via blend method.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how effective and safe laughter exercises are for people suffering from dry eye disease.
  • It was conducted at a big eye clinic in China with participants aged 18-45 who had symptoms of dry eyes.
  • Participants were divided into two groups: one did laughter exercises while the other used regular eye drops, and they were monitored for changes in their symptoms over eight weeks.

Fungal corneal ulcer is one of the leading causes of corneal blindness in developing countries. Corneal scars such as leukoplakia are formed due to inflammation, oxidative stress and non-directed repair, which seriously affect the patients' subsequent visual and life quality. In this study, drawing inspiration from the oriented structure of collagen fibers within the corneal stroma, we first proposed the directional arrangement of CuTA-CMHT hydrogel system at micro and macro scales based on the 3D printing extrusion method combined with secondary patterning.

Purpose: To evaluate the long-term cognitive function in children treated with intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) for retinopathy of prematurity(ROP), and the impact of IVR on the growth and ocular development.

Methods: In this retrospective study, the premature children aged 4 to 9 years who received monotherapy of IVR (IVR group, n = 25) or monotherapy of laser photocoagulation (LP) (LP group, n = 33) for ROP, and the same age premature children with no ROP (Control group, n = 26) were enrolled from 2020 to 2022 in the pediatric fundus clinic of Shenzhen Eye Hospital. Main outcome measures were full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and index score using the Chinese version of the Wechsler intelligence scale for children-fourth edition (WISC-IV) and Wechsler preschool and primary scale of intelligence-fourth edition (WPPSI-IV).

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between autoinducer-2 (AI-2) of oral microbial flora and the alveolar bone destruction in periodontitis to determine if AI-2 may have the potential that monitor periodontitis and predict bone loss.

Background: Plaque biofilm was the initiating factor of periodontitis and the essential factor of periodontal tissue destruction. The formation of biofilms depended on the complex regulation of the quorum sensing (QS) system, in which bacteria could sense changes in surrounding bacterial density by secreting the autoinducer (AI) to regulate the corresponding physiological function.
