The continuous evolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the emergence of variants of concern (VOCs) underscore the critical role of vaccination in pandemic control. These mutations not only enhance viral infectivity but also facilitate immune evasion and diminish vaccine efficacy, necessitating ongoing surveillance and vaccine adaptation. Current SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, including inactivated, live-attenuated, viral vector, protein subunit, virus-like particle, and nucleic acid vaccines, face challenges due to the immune evasion strategies of emerging variants.

Background: Maternal obesity is a health concern that may predispose newborns to a high risk of medical problems later in life. To understand the intergenerational effect of maternal obesity, we hypothesized that the maternal obesity effect is mediated by epigenetic changes in the CD34+/CD38-/Lin- hematopoietic stem cells (uHSCs) in the offspring. To investigate this, we conducted a DNA methylation centric multiomics study.

The ongoing emergence of new variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) underscores the urgent need for developing antivirals targeting both SARS-CoV-2 variants and related sarbecoviruses. To this end, we designed novel trispecific antibodies, Tri-1 and Tri-2, engineered by fusing the single-chain variable fragments (scFvs) of a potent antibody (PW5-570) to the Fc region of "Knob-into-Hole" bispecific antibodies (bsAbs) composed of two distinct broad antibodies (PW5-5 and PW5-535). Compared with the parental antibodies, Tri-1 and Tri-2 displayed enhanced binding affinities to the receptor-binding domains of SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 wild type, and Omicron XBB.

The self-homodyne detection (SHD) is a promising solution to achieve low-cost and low-power-consumption fiber-optic communications. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a high-capacity spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) system with SHD technology by employing single-mode multi-core fibers (SM-MCFs), where the fan-in/fan-out (FIFO) 3D photonic devices are designed and fabricated based on the femtosecond laser direct writing technique, enabling high-efficiency coupling between single-mode fibers (SMFs) and SM-MCFs. The FIFO 3D photonic devices, serving as the SDM (de)multiplexer, facilitate superior performance of low insertion loss and low inter-channel crosstalk.

Aptamers, as novel recognition molecules, hold immense potential across various domains such as biosensing, nucleic acid drugs, medical diagnostics, as well as environmental and food analysis. The majority of aptamer selection processes targeting small molecules and protein commonly employ magnetic bead-based methodologies, wherein the target is initially immobilized on magnetic beads, followed by magnetic separation. The Evolutionary Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment technique based on capillary electrophoresis (CE-SELEX) is acknowledged as one of the most efficient screening methods.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving the efficiency of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) adaptive equalizers (AEQs) used in short-reach coherent transmissions by proposing low-complexity alternatives.
  • It analyzes optimized adaptation algorithms for real-valued AEQs and introduces a method to keep computational complexity low during the adaptation process.
  • Experimental results demonstrate that these optimized algorithms can achieve performance comparable to traditional AEQs while reducing the number of multiplications by about 65% in a dual-polarization 16-QAM system.

Self-homodyne detection (SHD) is a promising approach to realize high-capacity short-reach optical transmission systems with low cost and low power consumption. We experimentally demonstrate single-carrier net 800-Gb/s SHD transmission with low-cost ∼MHz linewidth distributed feedback (DFB) laser over 2 km, 10 km, 25 km, and 40 km single-mode fiber (SMF) using three different quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats, including 80-Gbaud dual-polarization (DP) 64QAM, 100-Gbaud DP-32QAM, and 120-Gbaud DP-16QAM. Among them, net 800-Gb/s DP-64QAM SHD transmission over 25 km SMF using an uncooled DFB laser with a linewidth of 2.

Objectives: To analyze the cost-effectiveness of prostate cancer screening among Chinese men.

Methods: A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed from a societal perspective using a Markov model to compare 2 strategies: the population-based screening strategy and the current clinical diagnostic strategy. Relevant parameters were retrieved from published literature data and surveys, and univariate sensitivity analysis was used to assess the robustness of the model.

Low-power radio frequency (RF) signal detection is highly desirable for many applications, ranging from wireless communication to radar systems. A tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating for detecting low-power RF signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. When the frequency of the input RF signal is matched with the potential oscillation mode of the OEO, it is detected and amplified.
