Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of durvalumab maintenance therapy in patients with unresectable locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), comparing those with specific genetic mutations to those without.
  • - A total of 339 patients were analyzed, revealing similar progression-free survival (PFS) rates of 21.4 months for wild-type and 21.0 months for mutant groups, while significant differences in PFS were noted based on programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression levels.
  • - The findings suggest that while genetic mutations did not significantly alter outcomes, PD-L1 expression levels had a notable impact on PFS, highlighting the importance

A 17-gene stemness (LSC17) score determines risk in acute myeloid leukaemia patients treated with standard chemotherapy regimens. The present study further analysed the impact of the LSC17 score at diagnosis on outcomes following allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Out of 452 patients with available LSC17 score, 123 patients received allogeneic HCT.

Article Synopsis
  • Leukemic transformation (LT) is the leading cause of death in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), prompting a study of genetic changes in 26 patients, 21 of whom had paired samples.
  • Researchers found frequent mutations in the genes IDH2 (19%) and ASXL1 (14%) at the MPN diagnosis, alongside three known driver genes.
  • The study noted that while certain mutation levels remained stable in non-progressing patients, those with LT showed significant expansion in mutation levels over time, indicating important genetic dynamics that could aid in prognosis.

  • Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a common type of blood cancer, but despite treatment improvements, 40%-50% of patients still experience relapses with poor outcomes.
  • Two studies involving over 1,500 DLBCL patients highlighted that 260 had refractory DLBCL, defined by lack of response to initial therapies or disease progression shortly after treatment.
  • The results showed a low response rate to subsequent treatments, with a median overall survival of only 7.5 months, highlighting the urgent need for new treatment strategies for these patients.

Purpose: This study was performed to compare the utility of the semi-automated and automated side-cut core biopsy needles for thyroid nodules.

Methods: Between January 2014 and March 2020, biopsy was performed for 278 thyroid nodules using the semi-automated core needle and for 225 nodules using the automated core needle. Nondiagnostic rate, inconclusive rate, diagnostic performance and complication rates were evaluated and compared between two core needle types.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the incidence of axillary lymphadenopathy on ultrasound after COVID-19 vaccination and to investigate the factors affecting lymphadenopathy.

Methods: We evaluated patients who had received a COVID-19 vaccination within 12 weeks before an ultrasound examination between August and October 2021. The incidence of vaccine-related ipsilateral axillary lymphadenopathy was evaluated using ultrasound.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the impact of pegfilgrastim prophylaxis on preventing febrile neutropenia (FN) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients being treated with the R-CHOP regimen.
  • Results showed that pegfilgrastim significantly reduced FN incidence, treatment-related mortality (TRM), and the number of dose delays compared to a historical cohort.
  • Additionally, while overall survival rates were similar, pegfilgrastim improved survival in patients aged 75 and older, indicating its benefits for older DLBCL patients.

We present the computed tomography, ultrasonographic findings of a case of contralateral supraclavicular lymphadenopathy that occurred after AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination. Contralateral supraclavicular lymphadenopathy is very rare, but may be expected as an adverse reaction after COVID-19 vaccination. Radiologists as well as referring clinicians should be aware of this self-limiting process and its imaging features.

In patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) consolidation treatment options are between allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) and chemotherapy, based on disease risk at the time of initial presentation and age. Measurable residual disease (MRD) following induction chemotherapy could be incorporated as a useful parameter for treatment decisions. The present study evaluated treatment outcomes according to the next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based MRD status and the type of consolidation therapy in patients with normal karyotype (NK)-AML.

Background: PIK3CA contributes to cell growth via the PI3K-AKT-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. Mutations in the pathway are frequently observed in solid tumors. We assessed the efficacy and safety of sirolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, in chemotherapy-refractory solid tumors with PIK3CA mutations or amplifications.

Monomorphic epitheliotropic intestinal T-cell lymphoma (MEITL) is a provisional entity in the 2017 World Health Organization classifications. To further elucidate the clinicopathologic features of this new disease, we carried out a retrospective, multicenter analysis of 42 patients with MEITL. The median age of the patients was 59 years (range, 20-84 years), and 27 patients (64 %) were male.

Metastasis to the thyroid is very rare in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and only a few cases have been reported. Herein, we report a rare case of metastatic HCC to the thyroid in a 63-year-old man and discuss the various radiologic findings. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a heterogeneous enhancing mass that had invaded the thyroid cartilage in the left upper thyroid, compressing the airway.

Background: We investigated whether pazopanib maintenance following first-line chemotherapy would improve survival in patients with extensive disease small-cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC).

Methods: This study is a randomised, placebo-controlled, phase II study that enroled ED-SCLC patients who had not progressed after four cycles of etoposide plus platinum therapy. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (1 : 1 ratio) to either placebo or pazopanib 800 mg per day until progression or unacceptable toxicity.

Background: To assess whether the rotation of dexamethasone to methylprednisolone decreases the intensity of dexamethasone-induced hiccup (DIH) in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy.

Materials And Methods: Adult patients who experienced DIH within 3 days after the administration of dexamethasone as an antiemetic were screened. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to receive dexamethasone ( = 33) or methylprednisolone ( = 32) as an antiemetic (randomization phase).

Deletion of CDKN2A (p16) or amplification of CCND1 (cyclin D1) occurs commonly in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and induces sustained cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6 activation. Here, we report the antiproliferative activity of LY2835219, a selective CDK4/6 inhibitor through inhibition of CDK4/6-dependent Ser780 phosphorylation in retinoblastoma (RB) and induction of cell cycle arrest in HNSCC cells. In addition, we demonstrated the antitumor effects of HNSCC xenografts to LY2835219 in vivo.

Purpose: Triweekly delivery of cisplatin concurrent with a course of radiation therapy (RT) has been the standard regimen for treatment of locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) despite a high level of concern regarding treatment-related complications. We conducted a randomized phase II study to compare weekly and triweekly cisplatin delivery during RT with respect to efficacy and toxicity profiles.

Material And Methods: Patients with locally advanced NPC (stage II-IVb) were randomly assigned to a regimen of either seven doses of cisplatin (40 mg/m(2)) given once a week or three doses of cisplatin (100mg/m(2)) given every 3 weeks concurrently during RT.
