Under the EU Air Quality Directive (AQD) 2008/50/EC member states are required to undertake routine monitoring of PM composition at background stations. The AQD states for PM speciation this should include at least: nitrate , sulfate , chloride (Cl), ammonium (NH4), sodium (Na), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC). Until 2017, it was the responsibility of each country to determine the methodology used to report the composition for the inorganic components of PM.

Non-exhaust emissions are becoming of increasing significance with respect to total particulate matter (PM) concentrations in ambient air. Of particular interest is the metal content of this PM since metallic compounds are well known to have toxic effects on human health and the environment. In this study, 'bottom-up' annual tyre wear emission rates were estimated and compared to top-down' emissions declared by the UK; it was calculated that between 14 and 25 tonnes of Zn entered the atmosphere in PM in 2020.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA novel application of the Theil-Sen robust regression method for determining the temporal trends in the concentration of heavy metals in UK ambient air over the period 2005-2020 is presented and compared to other regression methods. We have demonstrated improvements over non-robust methods of regression, proving the ability to tease out trends that are small with respect to the variability of the concentration measurement. The method is used to identify, in general, large and significant trends in the concentrations of Ni, As, Pb and V over the period 2005-2020, either across the UK as a whole or at groupings of site classifications in the UK.

A novel method to assess the uncertainty of measurement of mercury in precipitation for the UK's Heavy Metals Monitoring Network is presented. The method makes use of the fact that, because of the high risk of sample contamination, samples are taken in duplicate in order to ensure valid data is available for as many sampling periods as possible. Where both samples are valid a good opportunity is afforded to use the statistical differences in the rain volumes sampled and the mercury concentrations measured to assess the overall uncertainty of the measurement.

The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated along with the optical analytical conditions for maximum recovery. Optimal TD conditions for adsorption and desorption of aldehydes using MOF-5 (Zn-based MOF)+ Tenax-TA were determined as -25 °C and 150 °C, respectively (purge volume: 100 ml).
