Nocturnal wearing of complete dentures and obstructive sleep apnea: A meta-analysis.

Statement Of Problem: Improvement in outcomes of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) could answer the question of whether nocturnal wearing of removable complete dentures is beneficial.

Purpose: To evaluate the available literature that compares nocturnal wearing of removable complete dentures or overdentures in patients diagnosed with OSA on the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), quality of sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]) and other outcomes.

Methods: Registration of the proposed protocol was done in an open-source registry.

Therefore, a comparative evaluation of IL-1β levels in the defective eye before and after placement of an ocular prosthesis is needed.

The accurate replacement of a missing eye with an ocular prosthesis that matches the healthy eye in terms of color and dimension of the sclera and iris is crucial for individuals who have lost an eye from trauma or cancer. A method is shown for precisely imitating the patient's sclera in terms of translucency from the patient's healthy eye for the prosthetic eye by creating custom translucency tabs. It is a straightforward, effective, and time-saving method of improving results during prosthesis fabrication.

Identification of metabolic fingerprints in severe obstructive sleep apnea using gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is considered a major sleep-related breathing problem with an increasing prevalence rate. Retrospective studies have revealed the risk of various comorbidities associated with increased severity of OSA. This study aims to identify novel metabolic biomarkers associated with severe OSA.

Prosthetic management of a postsquamous cell carcinoma patient with maxillomandibular resection including lip.

Maxillofacial defects not only create esthetic and functional problems for the patient but also have psychological and social impact on the patient. The present clinical report describes the management of a patient who had undergone partial maxillectomy, hemimandibulectomy, and partial resection of the lip on the left side. Rehabilitation of this patient was done using silicone lip prosthesis and maxillary obturator.

Assessment of the Healing of Dental Implant Surgical Site Following Low-Level Laser Therapy Using Bioclinical Parameters: An Exploratory Study.

Statement Of Problem: Because of the toxicity of vanadium in Ti-6Al-4V alloy, next generation of titanium alloys is proposed to focus on niobium-containing alloy, but for clinical applications, it is crucial for this alloy to bond with acrylic resins with or without the use of primers. However, literature was lacking about the effect of primers on bonding of autopolymerizing resins to Ti-6Al-7Nb.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of different metal primers on the shear bond strength of acrylic resin to Ti-6Al-7Nb.

Implant-assisted removable partial denture: An approach to switch Kennedy Class I to Kennedy Class III.

The Kennedy Class I and II distal extension situation poses a challenge to the prosthodontist as it inherently possesses a lack of stability, which may be attributed to the difference in compressibility of the mucosa and the periodontal ligament surrounding the distal-most abutment tooth. This results in a rotational tendency of the prosthesis around the line connecting its terminal abutments. Placement of osseointegrated dental implants in the posterior edentulous regions, distal to the terminal abutment provides improved vertical support to the distal extension removable partial denture, effectively converting its intraoral performance from a Kennedy Class I to a Class III situation, thereby resulting in improved stability of the prosthesis and consequently, enhanced patient satisfaction.

Cerrobend shielding stents for buccal carcinoma patients.

Buccal carcinoma is one of the most common oral malignant neoplasms, especially in the South Asian region. Radiotherapy, which plays a significant role in the treatment of this carcinoma, has severe adverse effects. Different types of prosthesis may be constructed to protect healthy tissues from the adverse effects of treatment and concentrate radiation in the region of the tumor mass.

A pilot study to evaluate the efficacy of cerrobend shielding stents in preventing adverse radiotherapeutic effects in buccal carcinoma patients.

Background: Radiation stents made of Lipowitz metal or cerrobend alloy are commonly used to shield uninvolved tissues from electron beams used in therapeutic radiation treatment of head and neck cancers. However, studies investigating the efficacy of cerrobend shielding stent in patients with unilateral buccal carcinoma remain rare.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of cerrobend shielding stents in minimizing the potential adverse effects of radiation on oral tissues in buccal carcinoma patients.

A Simplified Method to Fabricate a Pneumatic Ocular Prosthesis for Large Ocular Defects.

When an enucleation or exenteration procedure removes the entire orbital contents but not the eyelids, an abnormally large orbital socket is created that would require an equally sized volume enhancing, flush fitting ocular prosthesis. The solid acrylic prosthesis would rest on or in the lower fornix and owing to its weight, causes distortion of the lower eyelid and/or asymmetrical alignment of the entire palpebral fissure. The aim of this article was to describe a method of fabricating a pneumatic light weight custom ocular prosthesis using lost wax technique to overcome the deteriorating effects of conventional solid ocular prosthesis.

Statement Of Problem: Sleep bruxism (SB) is an oral condition that is associated with tooth wear, orofacial pain, and interference with sleep. The most recommended management technique is the use of an occlusal splint. Although the mandibular advancement device (MAD) has shown good results, few well-designed randomized controlled trials are available with which to compare these treatment options.

An Integrated Approach for Cosmetic Rehabilitation of a Patient with Atrophia bulbi.

Atrophia bulbiis a small, shrunken, non-functional eye, most commonly due to trauma. It represents an ocular end-stage disease characterized by atrophy, shrinkage, and disorganization of the eyeball and intraocular contents, demonstrating the result of failed previous ocular therapy in which restoration of the morphologic and functional integrity of the eye is not possible. Majority of the patients with Atrophia bulbi eventually become blind and cosmetically unacceptable.

Three-dimensional quantitative analysis of the bone density of mandibular condyle in dentulous and edentulous jaws: an in vivo study.

Studies have reported that masticatory function and occlusal force are low in edentulous patients, which brings about a change in the density, thickness, and alignment of bony trabeculae. However, studies that have quantitatively measured the differential cortical and medullary bone densities of the mandibular condyle in vivo remain rare. This study determined and compared the cortical and medullary bone density of the mandibular condyle in dentulous and edentulous jaws, using multidetector computed tomography (CT).

Ocular rehabilitation following socket reconstruction with amniotic membrane transplantation with failed primary hydroxyapatite implant post enucleation.

There are several clinical situations that require enucleation in children, with retinoblastoma being the most common. Intra-orbital implants are routinely placed in children at the time of initial surgery to provide motility and cosmesis in addition to adequate orbital volume. Current practice employs intra-orbital implants made of nonporous silicone, hydroxyapatite, or porous polyethylene.

Mercury and other biomedical waste management practices among dental practitioners in India.

Objectives: The objective of the study was to assess the awareness and performance towards dental waste including mercury management policy and practices among the dental practitioners in North India.

Materials And Methods: An epidemiologic survey was conducted among 200 private dental practitioners. The survey form was composed of 29 self-administered questions frame based on knowledge, attitude, and those regarding the practices of dentists in relation to dental health-care waste management.

A simplified approach for placing the iris disc on a custom made ocular prosthesis: report of four cases.

This case report describes a series of four cases of different age group, in which a simplified approach was applied for positioning the iris disc on a custom made ocular prosthesis. For each of the patient, a pre-fabricated eye was selected; whose iris and pupil closely matched that of the natural eye. This was duplicated for use as a tray in impression procedure.
