Background: Q fever (QF) is a relatively rare zoonotic infectious disease, and complications such as vasculitis and endocarditis are uncommon but severe. This article reports a case of acute QF complicated by vasculitis.

Case Presentation: The patient presented with a week of recurrent fever.

Background: Previous studies have focused on the protective effect of Xinbao pills (XBP) on heart failure (HF) irrespective of the ejection fraction-based classification, However, there are still no reports on the mechanism and active compounds of XBP in HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the anti-HFrEF effects and mechanism of XBP and identify its active compounds.

Methods: Doxorubicin-induced HFrEF rats and HO-induced damage to H9c2 cardiomyocytes were established.

Background: Patients with microtia undergoing ear reconstruction with costal cartilage harvest often experience significant postoperative chest pain. The efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided superficial serratus anterior plane block (SSAPB) in pediatric patients remain unclear.

Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, sixty children were randomized to SSAPB or incision infiltration anesthesia (IA) (30 ml of 0.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a multimodal teaching method to train emergency residents to use point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in the assessment of shock.

Methods: The study subjects were Emergency Medicine residents at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine between January 2023 and December 2023. These residents volunteered for the study and were randomly divided into either the teaching reform (TR) group or the traditional teaching (TT) group.

Background: Serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) and parasternal block (PSB) are used in multimodal analgesia strategies to improve postoperative comfort and recovery. Their combined effectiveness for pediatric auricular reconstruction (AR) patients needs clarification.

Methods: A study was conducted on 100 children aged 8 to 12 undergoing autologous rib cartilage transplant in AR.

Background: Dexmedetomidine (Dex) as a local anesthesia adjuvant for nerve block procedures can improve the quality of patient recovery. However, the impact of using Dex as a local anesthetic adjuvant for serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) procedures on recovery quality for children undergoing ear reconstruction remains unclear.

Methods: Eighty-four patients who underwent ear reconstruction with autogenous costal cartilage (ACC) were randomized into two groups (n = 42/group) in which SAPB was performed with ropivacaine alone (R group) and with Dex and ropivacaine (DR group).

Objective: To study the efficacy of ultrasound-guided parasternal block (US-PSI) in pediatric patients undergoing auricular reconstruction surgery.

Methods: For this study, the authors recruited 60 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years who underwent auricular reconstruction with autologous costal cartilage (ACC) to correct microtia. They were randomized to receive either ultrasound-guided modified parasternal block or periprostatic local infiltration anesthesia (PLIA), with 30 cases in each group.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores a new approach for performing stellate ganglion block (SGB) in mice, positioning them supine with their arms abducted while administering anesthetic.
  • - Fifty mice were divided into four groups to assess the effects of SGB using ropivacaine, with results showing that all mice with SGB developed Horner's syndrome, and there was a significant decrease in heart rate compared to the control group.
  • - The complications observed were relatively low, with an overall rate of 18.4%, including minor issues like brachial plexus blocks and vascular injuries, but the study concluded that this method is effective for implementing SGB in mouse models.

Background: Cricothyrotomy is a lifesaving surgical technique in critical airway events. However, a large proportion of anesthesiologists have little experience with cricothyrotomy due to its low incidence. This study aimed to develop a multisensory, readily available training curriculum for learning cricothyrotomy and evaluate its training effectiveness.

Purpose: Pain following costal cartilage harvest surgery is the most common complaint of auricular reconstruction (AR). Anesthesiologists are continuously searching for an effective postoperative pain control method.

Methods: This study was conducted from 10 April 2022 to 10 June 2022.

Cricothyroid membrane puncture and incision, the key techniques to save the lives of the patients in the Can't Intubate,Can't Oxygenate (CICO) emergency, need to be mastered by all the airway management staff. However, the decision to carry out cricothyroid membrane puncture or incision is often delayed due to the unfamiliarity with the adjacent anatomical structure of the cricothyroid membrane and the inability to accurately locate the cricothyroid membrane. As a result, serious complications and rescue failure occur.

Itching is associated with various skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis and allergic dermatitis, and leads to repeated scratching behavior and unpleasant sensation. Although clinical and laboratory research data have shown that estrogen is involved in regulating itch, the molecular and cellular basis of estrogen in itch sensation remains elusive. In the present study, it was found that estrogen-treated mice exhibited reduced scratching bouts when challenged with histamine, chloroquine, the proteinase-activated receptor-2 activating peptide SLIGRL-NH2 (SLIGRL), compound 48/80, and 5-hydroxytryptamine when compared with mice in the placebo group.

Importance: The preferential use of a scalpel (SCT) or puncture techniques (PCT) for cricothyrotomy remains a controversial topic.

Objective: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing puncture cricothyrotomy with scalpel cricothyrotomy using overall success rate, first-time success rate, and time taken to perform the procedure as the primary outcome together with complications as a secondary outcome.

Evidence Review: Pubmed databases, EMBASE databases, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, from 1980 to October 2022.

Background: Rhinoplasty with autologous costal cartilage (ACC) is followed by severe pain in the chest. Ultrasound-guided (USG) serratus anterior plane block (SAPB), in combination with parasternal block (PSB), was earlier reported to be highly efficacious in relieving pain associated with thoracic anterior lateral surgery. However, it is unclear whether it is effective for pain relief after ACC harvest.

Background: Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a common cardiovascular disease and results in high rate of morbidity, mortality, hospitalizations, and disability, causing medical concern around the world. Xinbao Pill (XBP) has been widely applied to clinical practice for patients with CHF but lacks studies to verify its efficacy. This study provides a protocol of systematic review, with which we will verify the adjunctive efficacy and safety of XBP on CHF with evidence-based studies.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the adjunctive efficacy and safety of Puerarin injection (PI) on acute heart failure (AHF) based on a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: Nine databases were searched from March 1990 to March 2022 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to the adjunctive treatment of PI for AHF. The Cochrane collaboration tool was used to assess the risk of bias in the included studies.

What Is Known And Objective: Prior to nasotracheal intubation (NTI), topical nasal vasoconstrictors are used to prevent NTI-related epistaxis (NTIRE). Since we learned that there is no significant increase in NTIRE among hypertensive patients undergoing NTI with adequate lubrication but without vasoconstrictors, we initiated this randomized controlled study to assess the necessity of vasoconstrictor use in reducing NTIRE.

Methods: Patients with the American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification 1 and normal coagulation function, planned to undergo maxillofacial surgery with NTI were enrolled.
