Presently, there is no single, clear route for the near-term production of the huge volumes of CO-free hydrogen necessary for the global transition to any type of hydrogen economy. All conventional routes to produce hydrogen from hydrocarbon fossil fuels (notably natural gas) involve the production-and hence the emission-of CO, most notably in the steam methane reforming (SMR) process. Our recent studies have highlighted another route; namely, the critical role played by the microwave-initiated catalytic pyrolysis, decomposition or deconstruction of fossil hydrocarbon fuels to produce hydrogen with low to near-zero CO emissions together with high-value solid nanoscale carbonaceous materials.

This review discusses recent innovations using microwave fields in hydrogen production and synthesis of new battery materials, highlighting the unique properties of microwave heating. The palm Lodoicea maldivica is marcescent, with dead leaves remaining attached to the trunk for an extended period. To investigate how this trait affects the distribution and turnover of dead leaf material in Lodoicea forest, we measured dead leaf production and standing crops of dead leaves attached to palms (D) and in the litter layer (D); for comparison, we measured D in stands of the non-marcescent species Martellidendron hornei and Deckenia nobilis. In a litterbag experiment, we investigated the decomposition of four types of leaf material: newly dead marcescent Lodoicea, old marcescent Lodoicea, and newly dead Deckenia and Martellidendron.

A library of substituted thioureas was used as sulfur reagents in the synthesis of cobalt sulfides. The substitution pattern of the thioureas controls the decomposition rate of precursors into sulfur monomers and thereby aids in the exploration of decomposition kinetics on cobalt sulfide-phase formation, including phase-pure jaipurite (CoS), cobalt pentlandite (CoS), linnaeite (CoS), and cattierite (CoS).
