Purpose: (a) To design a methodology for drawing random samples of any Ensemble Average Propagator (EAP) (b) to modify the KomaMRI simulator to accommodate them as realistic spin movements to simulate diffusion MRI (dMRI) and (c) to compare these simulations with those based on the Diffusion Tensor (DT) model.

Theory And Methods: The rejection method is used for random sampling of EAPs: starting from a probability law that is easily sampled, and whose density function wraps the target EAP, samples are accepted when they lie inside the targeted region. This is used to sample the EAP as described by Mean Apparent Propagator MRI (MAP-MRI) and in Spherical Convolution (SC) based on Spherical Harmonics (SH).

Purpose: Driven equilibrium single pulse observation of T1 (DESPOT1) is a reliable technique for clinical 3D T1 brain mapping. However, its fixed repetition time (TR) and bandwidth (BW) and its linear modeling to estimate T1 conveys to an inefficient imaging protocol. We propose a variable DESPOT1 (vDESPOT1) acquisition and modeling strategy to improve scan efficiency and to accelerate image acquisition.

In MRI, multiple applications require knowledge of the inhomogeneity field map, such as off-resonance correction, susceptibility mapping, water-fat separation, and spectroscopy imaging. Standard fieldmap estimation methods produce results that are themselves distorted by the fieldmap. This is because it is assumed that the signal is instantaneously acquired at the echo time, which is only valid for short readouts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create and assess a new method for conducting free-breathing 3D whole-heart Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Angiography (CMRA) without contrast agents at a lower magnetic field strength of 0.55T.
  • To achieve this, researchers optimized pulse sequences and imaging techniques, incorporating advanced methods like low-rank denoising and respiratory motion correction, and tested their approach on 11 healthy volunteers.
  • Results showed that the new method produced high-quality images with minimal artifacts in just 6 minutes, matching the performance of higher field strength systems, paving the way for future testing in patients with heart conditions.

Purpose: The structural similarity index measure (SSIM) has become a popular quality metric to evaluate QSM in a way that is closer to human perception than RMS error (RMSE). However, SSIM may overpenalize errors in diamagnetic tissues and underpenalize them in paramagnetic tissues, resulting in biasing. In addition, extreme artifacts may compress the dynamic range, resulting in unrealistically high SSIM scores (hacking).

Purpose: Most T1 and T2 mapping take long acquisitions or needs specialized sequences not widely accessible on clinical scanners. An available solution is DESPOT1/T2 (Driven equilibrium single pulse observation of T1/T2). DESPOT1/T2 uses Spoiled gradient-echo (SPGR) and balanced Steady-State Free Precession (bSSFP) sequences, offering an accessible and reliable way for 3D accelerated T1/T2 mapping.

Purpose: QSM outside the brain has recently gained interest, particularly in the abdominal region. However, the absence of reliable ground truths makes difficult to assess reconstruction algorithms, whose quality is already compromised by additional signal contributions from fat, gases, and different kinds of motion. This work presents a realistic in silico phantom for the development, evaluation and comparison of abdominal QSM reconstruction algorithms.

Multiple simultaneous sound source localization (SSL) is one of the most important applications in the speech signal processing. The one-step algorithms with the advantage of low computational complexity (and low accuracy), and the two-step methods with high accuracy (and high computational complexity) are proposed for multiple SSL. In this article, a combination of one-step-based method based on the generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD), and a two-step-based method based on the adaptive generalized cross-correlation (GCC) by using the phase transform/maximum likelihood (PHAT/ML) filters along with a novel T-shaped circular distributed microphone array (TCDMA) is proposed for 3D multiple simultaneous SSL.

Low metabolic flexibility (MetF) may be an underlying factor for metabolic health impairment. Individuals with low MetF are thus expected to have worse metabolic health than subjects with high MetF. Therefore, we aimed to compare metabolic health in individuals with contrasting MetF to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Purpose: The presence of dipole-inconsistent data due to substantial noise or artifacts causes streaking artifacts in quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) reconstructions. Often used Bayesian approaches rely on regularizers, which in turn yield reduced sharpness. To overcome this problem, we present a novel L1-norm data fidelity approach that is robust with respect to outliers, and therefore prevents streaking artifacts.

In MR Fingerprinting (MRF), balanced Steady-State Free Precession (bSSFP) has advantages over unbalanced SSFP because it retains the spin history achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and scan efficiency. However, bSSFP-MRF is not frequently used because it is sensitive to off-resonance, producing artifacts and blurring, and affecting the parametric map quality. Here we propose a novel Spatial Off-resonance Correction (SOC) approach for reducing these artifacts in bSSFP-MRF with spiral trajectories.

The susceptibility of super paramagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) particles makes them a useful contrast agent for different purposes in MRI. These particles are typically quantified with relaxometry or by measuring the inhomogeneities they produced. These methods rely on the phase, which is unreliable for high concentrations.

Purpose: Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) is usually performed by minimizing a functional with data fidelity and regularization terms. A weighting parameter controls the balance between these terms. There is a need for techniques to find the proper balance that avoids artifact propagation and loss of details.

Purpose: To improve the quality of mean apparent propagator (MAP) reconstruction from a limited number of q-space samples.

Methods: We implement an -regularised MAP (MAPL1) to consider higher order basis functions and to improve the fit without increasing the number of q-space samples. We compare MAPL1 with the least-squares optimization subject to non-negativity (MAP), and the Laplacian-regularized MAP (MAPL).

Purpose: The 4th International Workshop on MRI Phase Contrast and QSM (2016, Graz, Austria) hosted the first QSM Challenge. A single-orientation gradient recalled echo acquisition was provided, along with COSMOS and the χ STI component as ground truths. The submitted solutions differed more than expected depending on the error metric used for optimization and were generally over-regularized.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the precision or statistical variability of the velocity measurements computed from MRI phase-contrast. From the analytical probability density function (PDF) of the phase in the signal we obtain the PDF of the velocity by means of an auto-convolution. This PDF allows the estimation of the precision of the velocity, important for the correct interpretation of the many parameters that are based on it.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists usually use special techniques called PET reconstruction to create images from scans, and these techniques often assume that the images can’t have negative values.
  • This can be a problem when there's not enough data, leading to inaccurate results, especially in complicated situations like imaging tumors.
  • The new method proposed in this paper allows for negative values in a smart way that keeps things accurate and even speeds up the process compared to other methods, making it better for finding the right information in tough cases.

Time constraints placed on magnetic resonance imaging often restrict the application of advanced diffusion MRI (dMRI) protocols in clinical practice and in high throughput research studies. Therefore, acquisition strategies for accelerated dMRI have been investigated to allow for the collection of versatile and high quality imaging data, even if stringent scan time limits are imposed. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI), an advanced acquisition strategy that allows for a high resolution of intra-voxel microstructure, can be sufficiently accelerated by means of compressed sensing (CS) theory.
