The anoxia risk in a shallow coastal lagoon (Sacca di Goro (SG), Italy) experiencing multiple pressures (clam aquaculture, anthropogenic nutrient inputs, climate change) was assessed by combining timescales of anoxia onset, benthic nutrient turnover, horizontal and vertical transport, multivariate statistics, and Geographic Information System (GIS). The biogeochemical and transport timescales were obtained by experimental measurements and physical modeling. To this purpose, daily oxygen (O) and nutrient fluxes [dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), ammonium (NH), dissolved reactive silica (SiO)] were measured in the benthic and pelagic compartments at six areas of the lagoon catching its complex spatial heterogeneity due to riverine and marine inputs, clams farming, depths, flushing and vertical exchange times, amount and quality of organic matter.

In shallow lagoons dissolved oxygen and nutrients fluxes regulate oxygen levels, water chemistry and primary production and are generally measured via dark incubations. A temporally and spatially detailed historical (1985-2018) analysis of cyanobacteria blooms was performed in the Curonian Lagoon (Lithuania, Russia), the largest coastal lagoon in the Baltic Sea. Satellite data allowed the mapping of cyanobacteria surface accumulations, so-called "scums", and of chlorophyll-a concentration. The 34-year time series shows a tendency towards later occurrence (October-November) of the cyanobacteria scum presence, whereas the period of its onset (June-July) remains relatively constant.

The interaction between microbial communities and benthic algae as nitrogen (N) regulators in poorly illuminated sediments is scarcely investigated in the literature. In many seagrass sediments, lucinid bivalves and their sulfur-oxidizing symbionts are thought to underpin key ecosystem functions, but little is known about their role in nutrient cycles, particularly nitrogen. We used natural stable isotopes, elemental analyses, and stable isotope probing to study the ecological stoichiometry of a lucinid symbiosis in spring and fall.
