Probiotics offer therapeutic benefits by modulating the local microbiome, the host immune response, and the proliferation of pathogens. Probiotics have the potential to treat complex diseases, but their persistence or colonization is required at the target site for effective treatment. Although probiotic persistence can be achieved by repeated delivery, no biomaterial that releases clinically relevant doses of metabolically active probiotics in a sustained manner has been previously described.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the involuntary leakage of urine in response to increased intra-abdominal pressure during episodes of exertion. A common treatment method for SUI is sling implantation underneath the urethra to provide support. Most current sling procedures, however, cannot adjust urethral tension postoperatively.

CO-based aliphatic polycarbonates (aPCs), produced through the alternating copolymerization of epoxides with CO, present an appealing option for sustainable polymeric materials owing to their renewable feedstock and degradable characteristics. An ongoing challenge in working with aPCs is modifying their mechanical properties to meet specific demands. Herein, we report that monomer ratio and polymer architecture of aPCs impact not only printability by digital light processing (DLP) additive manufacturing, but also dictate the thermomechanical and degradation properties of the printed objects.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide. The main causative agent of UTI is uropathogenic (UPEC). There is an immediate need for novel prophylactic and treatment strategies against UTI because of the increasing incidence of antimicrobial resistance among uropathogens.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterized by cartilage deterioration and subsequent inflammatory changes in the underlying bone. Injectable hydrogels have emerged as a promising approach for controlled drug delivery in cartilage therapies. This review focuses on the latest developments in utilizing injectable hydrogels as vehicles for targeted drug delivery to promote cartilage repair and regeneration.

The growth of multicellular organisms is a process akin to additive manufacturing where cellular proliferation and mechanical boundary conditions, among other factors, drive morphogenesis. Engineers have limited ability to engineer morphogenesis to manufacture goods or to reconfigure materials comprised of biomass. Herein, a method that uses biological processes to grow and regrow magnetic engineered living materials (mELMs) into desired geometries is reported.

Some animals form transient, responsive and solid-like ensembles through dynamic structural interactions. These ensembles demonstrate emergent responses such as spontaneous self-assembly, which are difficult to achieve in synthetic soft matter. Here we use shape-morphing units comprising responsive polymers to create solids that self-assemble, modulate their volume and disassemble on demand.

Materials that undergo reversible changes in form typically require top-down processing to program the microstructure of the material. As a result, it is difficult to program microscale, 3D shape-morphing materials that undergo non-uniaxial deformations. Here, a simple bottom-up fabrication approach to prepare bending microactuators is described.

Engineered living materials (ELMs) derive functionality from both a polymer matrix and the behavior of living cells within the material. The long-term goal of this work is to enable a system of ELM-based medical devices with both mechanical and bioactive functionality. Here, we fabricate multifunctional, stimuli-responsive ELMs comprised of acrylic hydrogel matrix and Escherichia coli.

Safer human-robot interactions mandate the adoption of proprioceptive actuation. Strain sensors can detect the deformation of tools and devices in unstructured and capricious environments. However, such sensor integration in surgical/clinical settings is challenging due to confined spaces, structural complexity, and performance losses of tools and devices.

Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is closely correlated with intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) diagnoses, indicating the need for continuous monitoring. Early intervention for IAH and ACS has been proven to reduce the rate of morbidity. However, the current IAP monitoring method is a tedious process with a long calibration time for a single time point measurement.

Flame-retardant coatings are crucial for intelligent systems operating in high-temperature (300-800°C) scenarios, which typically involve multi-joint discrete or continuous kinematic systems. These multi-segment motion generation systems call for conformable yet resilient skin for dexterous work, including firefighting, packaging inflammable substances, encapsulating energy storage devices, and preventing from burning. In fire scenes, a flame-retardant soft robot shall protect integrated electronic components safely and work for navigation and surveillance effectively.

Swabbing tests have proved to be an effective method of diagnosis for a wide range of diseases. Potential occupational health hazards and reliance on healthcare workers during traditional swabbing procedures can be mitigated by self-administered swabs. Hence, we report possible methods to apply closed kinematic chain theory to develop a self-administered viral swab to collect respiratory specimens.

Sudden hearing loss can be treated noninvasively by administering drugs to the middle ear (≈1 ml) via the eustachian tube. The nasopharyngeal cavity requires high dexterity manipulation as it is restricted by the nasal vestibule, and precise drug delivery through the small cavity can allow previously unreachable areas to be reconsidered for localized delivery. Nitinol has shape memory capabilities and can be used for distal actuation accessed from small lumen and a tortuous path.

Shape-memory Nitinol holds burgeoning promise as smart actuators due to its effective resilience, high energy density, and scalability for a myriad of mesoscale machines and robotic applications. However, the higher actuation temperature and prolonged cooling time for a cyclic response make Nitinol precarious and less appealing for commercial use. On the contrary, hydrogels belong to the three dimensional (3D) polymer family where the bulk of the matrix encapsulates water (≈80-90 wt%) constituting a compelling heat-trapping medium.
