Background: Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) is an increasingly common surgical procedure for a variety of spinal pathologies. As both opioid use and healthcare costs remain major national healthcare crises, it is crucial to understand methods of effective pain management in spine surgery, including regional anesthesia. While transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks are also commonly performed for anterior spinal surgery, literature evaluating outcomes after TAP blocks for ALIF patients is sparse.

Background: Interest in outpatient surgery has grown secondary to emphasis on the delivery of efficient, high-quality care. This study sought to compare 90-day complications between pediatric patients undergoing outpatient versus inpatient brachial plexus nerve surgery.

Methods: A single institution database was queried for primary exploration and treatment of brachial plexus birth injuries from 2011 to 2022.

Purpose: This study compares the concomitant intra- and extra-articular pathologies in patients undergoing primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) to their subsequent single or 2-stage revision ACLR.

Methods: Patients from 2012 to 2021 with minimum two-year follow-up after single-stage revision ACLR were matched with patients who underwent 2-stage revision ACLR by age, sex, and body mass index. Concomitant pathologies and procedures were compared from primary to single or 2-stage revision ACLR.

Purpose: The addition of lateral extra-articular augmentation procedures (LEAP) to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) reduces graft failure rates in hamstring ACLR. However, their effects on return-to-sport (RTS) testing are not well understood in the setting of quadriceps (Quad) or bone-tendon-bone (BTB) autograft ACLR. The purpose was to evaluate the effects of adding LEAP to Quad or BTB autograft ACLR in young athletes, with respect to formal RTS testing outcomes.

Purpose: To assess the relationship between the presence, depth, and location of the lateral femoral notch sign (LFNS) on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the risk of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) graft failure, as well as secondary return to sport (RTS) endpoints.

Methods: Patients with primary ACLR failure between 2012 and 2021 were identified and matched to patients without primary ACLR failure by sex, age, and body mass index. Patients with incomplete medical records, inadequate follow-up, or concomitant lateral extra-articular tenodesis or anterolateral ligament reconstruction were excluded.

Purpose: Outpatient orthopedic surgery is becoming more common as a method of providing safe and cost-effective medical care. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes between adult patients undergoing outpatient versus inpatient brachial plexus surgery.

Methods: A single institution database was queried for patients with brachial plexus injuries undergoing brachial plexus exploration with or without concomitant reconstructive procedures from 2010 to 2022.

Background: There are no studies that compare the outcomes and complications of single-versus two-stage revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) after primary ACLR failure. This purpose of this study is to examine clinical and functional outcomes and complications associated with single and two-stage revision ACLR after primary ACLR failure.

Methods: All patients who underwent single or two-stage revision ACLR after primary ACLR failure between 2012 and 2021 with a minimum of a 2 year follow-up were included.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the long-term clinical complications, outcomes, and return to sport (RTS) rates in patients aged 30 or younger with a primary full-thickness arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR).

Methods: All patients who underwent a primary full-thickness ARCR at age 30 years or younger from 2003 to 2021 with a minimum of a 2-year follow-up were included. Complications, repeat surgeries, and return to sport rates were collected.

Purpose: Our goals were to: 1) examine the occurrence of behavioral and emotional symptoms in children on the autism spectrum in a large national sample, stratifying by sex, and 2) evaluate whether children with increased autism-related social communication deficits also experience more behavioral and emotional problems.

Methods:  Participants (n = 7,998) were from 37 cohorts from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program. Cross-sectional information on demographic factors, parent-report of an ASD diagnosis by clinician, Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) scores, and Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) scores were obtained for children aged 2.

Background: Prenatal fish intake is a key source of omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids needed for brain development, yet intake is generally low, and studies addressing associations with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related traits are lacking.

Objective: This study aimed to examine associations of prenatal fish intake and ω-3 supplement use with both autism diagnosis and broader autism-related traits.

Methods: Participants were drawn from 32 cohorts in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Cohort Consortium.

Objective: -3 fatty acid consumption during pregnancy is recommended for optimal pregnancy outcomes and offspring health. We examined characteristics associated with self-reported fish or -3 supplement intake.

Design: Pooled pregnancy cohort studies.

Background: Widespread exposure to organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants with potential reproductive toxicity raises concern regarding the impacts of gestational exposure on birth outcomes. Previous studies of prenatal OPE exposure and birth outcomes had limited sample sizes, with inconclusive results.

Objectives: We conducted a collaborative analysis of associations between gestational OPE exposures and adverse birth outcomes and tested whether associations were modified by sex.

Background: Tibial tubercle osteotomy (TTO) is a well-established surgical treatment option for patients with patellofemoral disorders.

Purpose: To determine the rate of early (≤90 day) postoperative complications after TTO and variables related to postoperative complications.

Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.

Background: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) and distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) are well-recognized treatments to address varus and valgus malalignment, respectively, in the setting of symptomatic unicompartmental arthritis of the tibiofemoral joint. The existing literature is limited in its ability to characterize complications after HTO or DFO procedures.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine the rate of early (≤90 days) postoperative complications and associated variables from the 15-year experience of a single academic institution.

Article Synopsis
  • The ECHO-Wide Cohort Study (EWC) is a big research project started in 2016 to help improve children's health in the U.S. by looking at different factors that affect their well-being.
  • It collects lots of data from 69 groups and has information on over 60,000 kids, with some kids also giving new info and samples for research.
  • Researchers study five main health areas, like how kids develop and their weight, while considering things like air pollution and family health.

This study examined the relationship between maternal food source and preparation during pregnancy and the duration of breastfeeding among 751 mother-child dyads in the United States. The data collected from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program included twelve cohorts of mothers (age ≥ 18) who delivered infant(s). Three categories of maternal food source and preparation including, High, Moderate, or Low Food Source Quality were derived from the mother report.
