Postingestive nutrient stimulation conditions food preferences through striatal dopamine and may be associated with blunted brain responses in obesity. In a cross-sectional study, we tested flavor-nutrient conditioning (FNC) with maltodextrin-enriched yogurt, with maltodextrin previously optimized for concentration and dextrose equivalents (n = 57), and to mask texture cues (n = 102). After conditioning, healthy volunteers (n = 52) increased preference for maltodextrin-paired (+102 kcal, CS+), relative to control (+1.

The majority of pituitary adenomas occur in a sporadic context, and in the absence of known genetic predisposition. Three common variants at the (rs2359536), (rs10763170) and (rs17083838) loci were previously associated with sporadic pituitary adenomas in the Han Chinese population, but these findings have not yet been replicated in any other population. The aim of this case-control study was to assess if these variants are associated with susceptibility to sporadic pituitary adenomas in the Portuguese population.

Pituitary gigantism is extremely rare, resulting from excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) before fusion of epiphysial growth plates. We report a case of a 13-year-old boy, who presented with increased statural growth and headaches since the age of 10 years. On physical examination, his height was 180.

We report a case of a 46-year-old woman who presented with a midline neck mass 2 years after total thyroidectomy for Graves' disease. Despite levothyroxine treatment withdrawal, she remained biochemically with subclinical hyperthyroidism. Her thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibodies were consistently elevated.

Unlabelled: Pituitary apoplexy is a rare medico-surgical emergency that stems from an acute expansion of a pituitary adenoma from infarction or haemorrhage and where the treatment strategy is still controversial. Clinical presentation is highly variable and a high index of suspicion is needed to make the diagnosis. Furthermore, in less than half of cases, a precipitating event is identified.

Unlabelled: Granular cell tumours (GCT) are rare, slow-growing, benign neoplasms that are usually located in the head and neck. They are more frequent in the female gender and typically have an asymptomatic clinical course, being diagnosed only at autopsy. Symptomatic GCT of the neurohypophysis are exceedingly rare, being less than 70 cases described so far.

Hyporeninemic hypoaldosteronism, despite being common, remains an underdiagnosed entity that is more prevalent in patients with diabetes mellitus. It presents with asymptomatic hyperkalemia along with hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis without significant renal function impairment. The underlying pathophysiological mechanism is not fully understood, but it is postulated that either aldosterone deficiency (hyporeninemic hypoaldosteronism) and/or target organ aldosterone resistance (pseudohypoaldosteronism) may be responsible.

Background And Objectives: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome is a stress-induced cardiomyopathy, which can be interpreted as an acute coronary syndrome as it progresses with suggestive electrocardiographic changes. The purpose of this article is to show the importance of proper monitoring during surgery, as well as the presence of an interdisciplinary team to diagnose the syndrome.

Case Report: Male patient, 66 years old, with diagnosis of gastric carcinoma, scheduled for diagnostic laparoscopy and possible gastrectomy.

Objectives: To assess the self-reported prevalence of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease in Portugal and their distribution by gender, age-group and region.

Methods: We surveyed 38,893 individuals aged 40 or over, with a distribution by region and age-group proportional to the national population, through a questionnaire applied in the community in a household approach using the random route method, between October 2006 and February 2007.

Results: The self-reported prevalence of hypertension was 23.

Adipose tissue is an organ with an endocrine function among others. Adipokines there produced have several roles and can be, according to their main function, grouped in our groups: immunologic, cardiovascular, metabolic and endocrine adipokines. Interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor a and complement factors B, C3 and D (adipsin) and are within the first group.
