Background: Specialized neurocritical care (NCC) improves outcomes in acute brain injury (ABI), but significant variability exists in practices across and hospitals within South Korea's developing national NCC system. This study aims to assess clinical variability among patients with ABI across six tertiary NCC units (NCCUs) in South Korea and evaluate center-specific effects on clinical outcomes.
Methods: A multicenter registry of patients with ABI admitted to NCCUs between April 2023 and April 2024 was analyzed.
Introduction: The temporal dynamics of the vessel wall in intracranial arterial disease (ICAD) may differ depending on the etiology. We investigated temporal changes in narrowed intracranial arteries after ischemic stroke using serial high-resolution vessel wall imaging (HR-VWI).
Methods: We retrospectively recruited patients with ICAD-related ischemic stroke who underwent two or more HR-VWI scans.
Purpose: Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) requires urgent treatment, and accurate and timely diagnosis is essential for improving outcomes. This pivotal clinical trial aimed to validate a deep learning algorithm for ICH detection and assess its clinical utility through a reader performance test.
Methods: Retrospective CT scans from patients with and without ICH were collected from a tertiary hospital.
Clinical guidelines recommend warfarin for patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and ischemic stroke; however, robust evidence is lacking. We investigated the clinical benefits of different categories of antithrombotic medications in ischemic stroke patients positive for antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) in real-world practice. We reviewed data from patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack who tested positive for aPLs.

As the immune response after aSAH is a dynamic process, we aim to track and characterize immune cell trajectories over time to identify patterns associated with various clinical outcomes.
Methods: In this retrospective single-center study of patients with aSAH, we analyzed immune cell count trajectories, including neutrophil, monocyte, and lymphocyte counts, collected from day 1 to day 14.
Introduction: Patent foramen ovale (PFO)-stroke, a form of cryptogenic stroke, has certain identifying clinical and imaging features. However, data describing this stroke type remain inconsistent. This study examined the potential variations in PFO-stroke features, depending on age.

However, the relationship between post-EVT hyperperfusion and clinical outcomes remains unclear and requires further clarification. We reviewed consecutive patients with anterior circulation occlusion who were successfully recanalized with EVT.

The hazardous effects of BPA absorbed through the skin may be more severe; however, few studies have investigated the skin toxicity of BPA. This study investigated the effects of BPA on human epidermal keratinocyte cell lines, which is relevant for skin exposure.

Advances in magnetic resonance technology have enabled the visualization of intracranial arteries using high-resolution vessel wall imaging (HR-VWI). This review summarizes the anatomical, embryological, and histological differences between the intracranial and extracranial arteries.

We aimed to compare the performance of a deep-learning algorithm for ICH detection trained on strongly and weakly annotated datasets, and to assess whether a weighted ensemble model that integrates separate models trained using datasets with different ICH improves performance.
Methods: We used brain CT scans from the Radiological Society of North America (27,861 CT scans, 3,528 ICHs) and AI-Hub (53,045 CT scans, 7,013 ICHs) for training.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) has a negative influence on school attendance. We aimed to identify factors associated with school absenteeism in adolescents with AD. We used data from the 3rd to 11th annual Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey completed from 2007 to 2015.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are beneficial bacteria for humans and animals. However, the characteristics and functions of LAB in insects remain unclear. Here, we isolated LAB from the gut of Riptortus pedestris, a pest that is a significant problem in soybean cultivation in Korea, and identified two Lactococcus lactis and one Enterococcus faecalis using matrix-associated laser desorption/ionization-time of flight and 16S rRNA analyses.

This study aimed to evaluate the burden and pattern of WMHs and its clinical implications in the MMD trajectory.
Methods: Adult patients with MMD without significant structural lesions were 1:1 propensity score-matched with healthy controls for sex and vascular risk factors.
Background And Purpose: Ischemic stroke is a heterogeneous disease with various etiologies. The current subtyping process is complicated, time-consuming, and costly. Metabolite-based biomarkers have the potential to improve classification and deliver optimal treatments.

No medication has been approved for secondary injuries after traumatic brain injury (TBI). While free radicals are considered a major mediator of secondary injury, conventional antioxidants only have modest clinical efficacy. Here, we synthesized CX201 consisting of core cerium oxide nanoparticles coated with 6-aminocaproic acid and polyvinylpyrrolidone in aqueous phase.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOcular cranial nerve palsy of presumed ischemic origin (OCNPi) is the most common type of ocular cranial nerve palsy (OCNP) in patients aged ≥ 50 years; however, no definite diagnostic test exists. As diagnostic criteria include clinical improvement, diagnoses are often delayed. Diagnostic biomarkers for OCNPi are required; we hypothesized that cerebral small vessel disease is associated with OCNPi.

We aimed to describe the neuroimaging features of aPL-stroke compared with atrial fibrillation-related stroke (AF-stroke), a major hidden cause of cryptogenic stroke. Using a prospective stroke registry, we identified consecutive aPL- and AF-stroke patients without other potential causes of stroke.

Background And Purpose: Although it has been reported that the amount of alcohol consumption has a J-shaped association with ischemic stroke, it is unclear whether differences in drinking patterns affect this relationship. We aimed to clarify the impact of drinking patterns on ischemic stroke in midlife.
Methods: We used data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, which is a large-sized, standardized population cohort in Korea.
