Agitation in healthcare, particularly in psychiatric settings, is a prevalent and escalating global concern. Despite its significance, healthcare students often feel underprepared to manage agitation, citing fear, stigma, and limited clinical exposure. Traditional teaching methods, such as lectures or simulations, are resource-intensive and offer limited opportunities for repeated practice in low-risk environments.

In line with the global rise in mental health disorders, Singapore has experienced a notable increase in prevalence, from 13.4% in 2020 to 17% in 2022. Despite strategic efforts to strengthen mental health services, such as expanding the workforce of psychiatrists and psychologists and integrating care into primary healthcare settings, the Emergency Department (ED) faces escalating numbers of patients with psychiatric disorders.

Individuals diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) exhibit a markedly elevated prevalence of psychiatric disorders, particularly anxiety and depression. However, the underlying mechanisms contributing to the development of these psychiatric conditions in IBD patients remain poorly understood, and no effective therapeutic strategy has been definitively established. Recent advancements in nanotechnology-based interventions offer promising potential for restoring gut homeostasis, which may mitigate inflammation and oxidative stress associated with IBD.

Background: Among people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there is an increased prevalence of age-related diseases. However, the biological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain incompletely understood.

Methods: The expression of cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), one of the main enzymes for endogenous hydrogen sulfide (HS) production in the brain, is age-dependent.

Aims: This systematic review aims to examine how climate change and its related stressors may affect the mental health of workers in industries vulnerable to climate change. The review also seeks to evaluate coping strategies used by affected workers, as well as potential interventions to mitigate and prevent these mental health effects.

Method: A literature search was conducted in June 2024 in databases such as PUBMED, EMBASE, PsycINFO and Web of Science, using a combination of keywords about climate change, mental health or illness, and vulnerable industries.

Introduction: Hepatitis B is a highly contagious viral infection that has long been a significant global health concern. Given its adverse effects on the course of the disease, evaluating psychiatric outcomes is important. Despite indications of an increased risk of psychological outcomes among those with hepatitis B, the extent of this association remains unclear.

Background: The growing prevalence of mental health conditions, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the urgent need for enhanced psychiatric education. The distinctive nature of psychiatry- which is heavily centred on communication skills, interpersonal skills, and interviewing techniques- indicates a necessity for further research into the use of GenAI in psychiatric education.

Objective: Given GenAI has shown promising outcomes in medical education, this study aims to discuss the possible roles of GenAI in psychiatric education.

While functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) had previously been suggested for major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis, the clinical application to predict antidepressant treatment response (ATR) is still unclear. To address this, the aim of the current study is to investigate MDD ATR at three response levels using fNIRS and micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs). Our proposed algorithm includes a custom inter-subject variability reduction based on the principal component analysis (PCA).

Article Synopsis
  • Depression treatment effectiveness differs greatly among individuals, highlighting the need for objective biomarkers that can accurately predict therapy outcomes to improve treatment efficiency.
  • This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) combined with clinical assessments to explore whether machine learning techniques could forecast treatment responses in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).
  • Findings revealed that changes in total hemoglobin levels in a specific brain region (dlPFC) correlated significantly with treatment response, and the fNIRS-only model demonstrated better predictive accuracy compared to a model that also included clinical data.

Article Synopsis
  • In Vietnam, public sector clinics currently dominate methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) services for drug users, but private sector involvement is necessary for the future sustainability of these programs due to anticipated declines in foreign aid.
  • A study involving 395 participants from one private and two public clinics assessed patient satisfaction, revealing that while satisfaction was generally high, patients wanted more comprehensive care, particularly in private facilities.
  • The findings suggest that improving administrative procedures and the skill level of health workers in private clinics, as well as integrating MMT with broader healthcare services, is essential for enhancing patient care and program effectiveness.

Improving vaccine coverage among children is crucial to prevent the long-term consequences of COVID-19 infections and the emergence of resistant COVID-19 variants, especially in resource-scarce settings. This study determined factors influencing the willingness to take and pay for COVID-19 vaccine for children among Vietnamese healthcare professionals and the public. A Theory-Based discrete-choice experiment was focused on a different topic related to vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine for children, Monkeypox, the adult COVID-19 booster, the HIV vaccine, and a potential future pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is identified by slow walking speed and subjective memory complaints in older adults, and it may serve as an early warning sign for cognitive decline and dementia.
  • A systematic review of 20 studies, involving over 1.2 million participants, found that those with MCR had more than double the risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia compared to those without MCR.
  • The findings suggest that MCR could be a valuable predictor of long-term cognitive issues, emphasizing the need for further research to confirm these associations.
