Background: Age-related deficits in Achilles tendon stiffness have been linked to shorter calf muscle operating lengths. These shorter lengths have the potential to precipitate higher requisite excitations and thereby an earlier onset of local fatigability in older adults. However, the connection between calf muscle operating lengths and muscle fatigability has yet to be systematically explored, even in healthy younger adults.

Text-based person retrieval is defined as the challenging task of searching for people's images based on given textual queries in natural language. Conventional methods primarily use deep neural networks to understand the relationship between visual and textual data, creating a shared feature space for cross-modal matching. The absence of awareness regarding variations in feature granularity between the two modalities, coupled with the diverse poses and viewing angles of images corresponding to the same individual, may lead to overlooking significant differences within each modality and across modalities, despite notable enhancements.

Endoscopic variceal band ligation (EVBL) is a key therapy for the management of esophageal varices in patients with cirrhosis, but complications, though infrequent, can have significant clinical implications. We report a rare case of a 76-year-old woman with metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease cirrhosis who developed esophageal obstruction followed by a severe esophageal stricture after EVBL. Initial symptoms included dysphagia and chest pain, which led to the discovery of complete esophageal obstruction secondary to sloughing mucosa and detached bands on endoscopy.

Background: There is an ongoing controversy regarding the optimal uterine closure technique for preventing niche development. Single- and double-layer closures have been considered comparable in terms of niche incidence after primary cesarean delivery. However, rather than simply the presence of a niche, its volume and residual myometrial thickness are the most potent factors in predicting gynecologic symptoms and subsequent pregnancy complications in women with cesarean scar defects.

Background: During pre-bariatric surgery evaluation, we routinely perform objective testing for GERD (endoscopy, pH monitoring if no reflux esophagitis found) with high-resolution manometry (HRM) and functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) to evaluate esophageal motility. In this study, we aimed to identify differences in FLIP metrics between obese patients with and without GERD.

Methods: We reviewed our clinical database of obese patients evaluated for bariatric surgery, including surgery-naïve patients and patients who had sleeve gastrectomy (SG) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) that resulted in inadequate weight loss.

An upper endoscopy is often performed as one of the first tests in patients with dysphagia and other esophageal symptoms. Classically, patients with achalasia may present with a dilated, fluid and food filled esophagus with a tight "rosette"-appearing lower esophageal sphincter. However, patients may present with early stages of disease with more subtle findings that are not readily identified or documented.

The objective of this review is to investigate the effect of an additional layer of flowable composite for cavity lining on the clinical outcome of direct posterior composite restorations. The PICO question (patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome) was stated as follows: Does the additional application of a flowable composite as a cavity liner improve the clinical outcome of Class-I and Class-II restorations? The electronic databases MEDLINE, Web of Science, LILAS, and BBO were assessed for identifying relevant clinical studies. After removal of duplicate records, 309 records could be identified and, after a screening of the title and abstract, 20 articles were selected for full-text analysis.

Background: The term "elective induction of labor (eIOL)" refers to the practice of inducing labor before the due date in the absence of medical indication. In 2022, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommended that eIOL be considered for healthy women at 39 weeks of gestation. However, the acceptance of eIOL among pregnant women is crucial.

Measuring quantitative and accurate friction force at the nanoscale by means of atomic force microscopy is not straightforward. Numerous lateral force calibration methods have been proposed in the last decades. The most popular one is the wedge method that requires a specific calibration sample having areas that present constant slope and friction coefficient.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) metrics in obese patients, both surgically naïve and those who had undergone bariatric surgeries like sleeve gastrectomy (SG) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).
  • Researchers found that common symptoms were dysphagia and chest pain across all patient groups, with notable differences in FLIP response patterns, particularly in patients who had bariatric surgery.
  • Despite many patients showing FLIP abnormalities, these did not correlate with esophageal symptoms or high-resolution manometry (HRM) findings, indicating a need for further investigation into esophageal issues in this population.

Context: The heavy metal ions are the typical carcinogenic agents. Up to now, the interaction mechanism of toxic metal ions with the biomolecules such as carbohyrate have not been elucidated and reported in the detail. In this research work, the adjacent dissociation Gibbs energy (E) of M(HO)(R-OH) complexes depended significantly on the molecular volume of primary alcohols and the inductive effects of substituent R in primary alcohols (R = CH, CHCH, CHCHCH, CHCHCHCH, Cl-CH, F-CH) as well as the length of linear cellulose.
