Does a lack of juveniles indicate a threat? Understanding body size distributions in a group of long-lived vertebrates.

J Anim Ecol

Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems, Department of Ecological, Plant and Animal Sciences, School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Turtles are declining globally, and absences of juveniles during surveys are often interpreted as evidence of threats to early life stages. In Australia, for example, it is widely argued that a low number of juveniles is likely due to nest predation by introduced red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). However, small sample sizes within populations, low detectability of juveniles and turtles' long lifespans often confound the conclusion that a paucity of juveniles indicates a declining population.

A growing number of police departments in the United States have adopted specialized training models to handle situations involving people with mental illness (PWMI), including the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model and other models with reduced training hours (OMRTH). However, research on police chiefs' attitudes toward these training models, especially those working in rural areas, remains limited. To address this gap in the literature, this study explored the attitudes of rural police chiefs across two states regarding two categories of police training models (the CIT model and OMRTH) and examined factors influencing their viewpoints.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the primary reasons for death worldwide. These diseases often occur due to the occlusion of coronary arteries, thereby leading to insufficient blood and oxygen supply that damages cardiac muscle cells. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals which reflect heart electrical activity are being used for diagnosing various cardiac diseases.

Evolution is often uneven in its pace and outcomes, with long periods of stasis interrupted by abrupt increases in morphological and ecological disparity. With thousands of gene histories, phylogenomics can uncover the genomic signatures of these broad macroevolutionary trends. Diatoms are a species-rich lineage of microeukaryotes that contribute greatly to the global cycling of carbon, oxygen, and silica, which they use to build elaborately structured cell walls.

Forensic firearm and toolmark identification is based on the principle that firearms possess and impart individual characteristics on fired ammunition, which can be used to identify a bullet back to the barrel from which it was fired. However, these characteristics may change due to use, presenting challenges for firearm examiners. The goal of this research was to determine how solid copper bullets affect barrel-rifling characteristics after firing 500 rounds through a new Glock 19 Gen 5 pistol with a Glock Marksman Barrel (GMB).

Background: Many diseased conditions alter the fibrinogen and clotting activator concentrations, resulting in a unique network structure that may be resistant or susceptible to lysis. While much is known about the relationship between structure and lysis, previous studies overlooked confounding factors in the fibrin network structure that must be considered to develop targeted therapeutics.

Objectives: We aimed to determine how fiber diameter, network pore size, and protofibril packing density work together and individually to impact lysis.

The discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) is well-established as a means of performing model order reduction in approximating solutions to differential equations, but it has also more recently demonstrated potential in performing data class detection through subset selection. Leveraging the singular value decomposition for dimension reduction, DEIM uses interpolatory projection to identify the representative rows and/or columns of a data matrix. This approach has been adapted to develop additional algorithms, including a CUR matrix factorization for performing dimension reduction while preserving the interpretability of the data.

Fibrinolysis, the plasmin-mediated degradation of the fibrin mesh that stabilizes blood clots, is an important physiological process, and understanding mechanisms underlying lysis is critical for improved stroke treatment. Experimentalists are now able to study lysis on the scale of single fibrin fibers, but mathematical models of lysis continue to focus mostly on fibrin network degradation. Experiments have shown that while some degradation occurs along the length of a fiber, ultimately the fiber is cleaved at a single location.
