Background: Few large-scale population studies have examined both safety and vaccine effectiveness (VE) specifically for 5-11-year-olds during the Omicron-dominant period in a setting with low vaccine uptake. The BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccine, administered in two doses, has shown strong efficacy against symptomatic and severe COVID-19 in clinical trials involving children and young people (CYP). Accordingly, we examined the uptake, real-world safety, VE, and waning of BNT162b2 VE against symptomatic COVID-19 among children aged 5-11 years in Scotland.

Purpose: Presbyopia is an age-related condition characterized by diminished near-vision, primarily due to changes in the lens' adaptive capacity. Shear Wave Ultrasound Elastography (SWE) offers a novel/noninvasive method to measure lens stiffness and could potentially enhance our understanding of presbyopia's development. We aimed to use SWE to assess the elasticity of the human lens and explore the correlation between lens flexibility, age, presbyopia, and accommodation capacity.

Planetary health agendas need a strong human rights focus. Both public health and the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment depend on biodiversity, ecosystems, and a healthy biosphere. Targeted transdisciplinary health research, action, and communication on biodiversity-health linkages can clarify and reinforce the human rights obligations of public authorities whose decisions might negatively affect the environment.

We quantified the extent to which socio-economic position (SEP) contributed to ethnic inequalities in severe COVID-19 outcomes (hospitalization or death) in Scotland. We used linked 2011 Scottish Census and health records to assess whether ethnic inequalities were mediated by different SEP measures: area deprivation, educational status, household composition, and multigenerational household. We considered disaggregated ethnicities 'White Scottish', 'White British or Irish', 'Other White', 'South Asian', 'African, Caribbean, or Black', and 'Other'.

A micro-physiological model of the human small intestinal barrier incorporating mucus-generating cells has been developed. The established barrier was utilized to assess the absorption kinetics of three selected therapeutic compounds: Doxycycline, Ganciclovir, and its prodrug Valganciclovir, following the implementation of a thorough LC-MS/MS validation protocol. The co-culture of Caco-2 cells, representing absorptive enterocytes, and HT-29 MTX cells, modeling goblet cells, enabled the in-situ generation of a sufficiently thick mucus layer covering the entire cell monolayer.

Antibiotic misuse is a major global health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where inappropriate use contributes to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Inappropriate antibiotic use is exacerbated in LMICs by pressure from parents on physicians and pharmacists to prescribe and dispense antibiotics for their children, often for viral infections. There is currently limited knowledge of key issues in Iraq to improve future antibiotic use.

The research conducted between 2022 and 2024 has advanced our understanding of COVID-19 in children and young people (CYP), particularly with the emergence of the Omicron variant and its subvariants. The findings have reinforced that, while Omicron infections are often milder compared to earlier variants, the overall seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in children has increased, with notable regional and demographic disparities. COVID-19-related hospitalisation rates in children rose during Omicron waves, especially among infants, unvaccinated individuals, and CYP at higher risk, i.

Hypothesis: Nanoscale characterisation of the self-associated species formed by amphiphilic pharmaceuticals in aqueous solution carries relevance across their entire journey from development through to manufacture - relevant, therefore, not only as regards formulation of the drug products as medicines, but also potentially relevant to their bioavailability, activity, and clinical side effects. Such knowledge and understanding, however, can only be fully secured by applying a range of experimental and theoretical methodologies.
Experiments: Herein, we apply a synergistic combination of solubility, surface tension, SANS, NMR and UV spectroscopic studies, together with MD simulation and QM calculations, to investigate the meso-structures of propranolol hydrochloride aggregates in bulk aqueous solutions, at concentrations spanning 2.

Background: Insufficient physical activity, excessive screen time and short sleep duration among young children are global public health concerns; however, data on prevalence of meeting World Health Organisation 24-h movement behaviour guidelines for 3-4-year-old children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are limited, and it is unknown whether urbanisation is related to young children's movement behaviours. The present study examined differences in prevalence of meeting 24-h movement behaviour guidelines among 3-4-year-old children living in urban versus rural settings in LMICs.
Methods: The SUNRISE Study recruited 429, 3-4-year-old child/parent dyads from 10 LMICs.

A modular and 3D compartmentalized microfluidic system with electrospun porous membranes (PMs) for epithelialized organ-on-a-chip systems is presented. Our novel approach involves direct deposition of polymer nanofibers onto a patterned poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrate using electrospinning, resulting in an integrated PM within the microfluidic chip. The in situ deposition of the PM eliminates the need for additional assembly processes.

Transtibial prosthetic users do often struggle to achieve an optimal prosthetic fit, leading to residual limb pain and stump-socket instability. Prosthetists face challenges in objectively assessing the impact of prosthetic adjustments on residual limb loading. Understanding the mechanical behaviour of the pseudo-joint formed by the residual bone and prosthesis may facilitate prosthetic adjustments and achieving optimal fit.

For vaccine development and adoption decisions, the 'Full Value of Vaccine Assessment' (FVVA) framework has been proposed by the WHO to expand the range of evidence available to support the prioritization of candidate vaccines for investment and eventual uptake by low- and middle-income countries. Recent applications of the FVVA framework have already shown benefits. Building on the success of these applications, we see important new opportunities to maximize the future utility of FVVAs to country and global stakeholders and provide a proof-of-concept for analyses in other areas of disease control and prevention.
