Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive form of cancer therapy, and the development of a novel photosensitizer (PS) with optimal properties is important for enhancing PDT efficacy. Folate receptor (FR) membrane protein is frequently overexpressed in 40% of human cancer and a good candidate for tumor-specific targeting. Specific active targeting of PS to FR can be achieved by conjugation with the folate moiety.

We report a patient with logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (lv-PPA) who was diagnosed as having non-Alzheimer's disease (AD) tauopathy after multiple biophysical/biological examinations, including amyloid and F-florzolotau tau positron emission tomography (PET), had been performed. A woman in her late 60s who had previously been diagnosed as having AD was referred to us for a further, detailed examination. She had been unaware of any symptoms at the time of AD diagnosis, but she subsequently became gradually aware of a speech impairment.

When artificial radionuclides are released into the atmospheric environment, one of the important processes by which they affect the human radiation dose is the direct deposition of the radionuclides onto crop surfaces. Because leafy vegetables are consumed while fresh and often raw, the mass interception coefficient [= concentration in food (Bq/kg dry mass (DM) or fresh mass)/total deposition (Bq/m)] is a key parameter for estimating radionuclide concentrations in crops after the deposition of radionuclides on plant stands. However, such data are still sparse, especially for radiostrontium (Sr and Sr).

Drug metabolizing enzyme activity is affected by various factors such as drug-drug interactions, and a method to quantify drug metabolizing enzyme activity in real time is needed. In this study, we developed a novel radiopharmaceutical for quantitative imaging to estimate hepatic CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 activity. Iodine-123- and 125-labeled -desmethylvenlafaxine (I-ODV) was obtained with high labeling and purity, and its metabolism was found to strongly involve CYP3A4 and CYP2D6.

One of the remarkable phenomena in the laser-matter interaction is the extremely efficient energy transfer to [Formula: see text]-photons, that appears as a collimated [Formula: see text]-ray beam. For interactions of realistic laser pulses with matter, existence of an amplified spontaneous emission pedestal plays a crucial role, since it hits the target prior to the main pulse arrival, leading to a cloud of preplasma and drilling a narrow channel inside the target. These effects significantly alter the process of [Formula: see text]-photon generation.

In vivo characterization of pathologic deposition of tau protein in the human brain by PET imaging is a promising tool in drug development trials of Alzheimer disease (AD). 6-(fluoro-F)-3-(1H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridin-1-yl)isoquinolin-5-amine (F-MK-6240) is a radiotracer with high selectivity and subnanomolar affinity for neurofibrillary tangles that shows favorable nonspecific brain penetration and excellent kinetic properties. The purpose of the present investigation was to develop a visual assessment method that provides both an overall assessment of brain tauopathy and regional characterization of abnormal tau deposition.

How do separate sexes originate and evolve? Plants provide many opportunities to address this question as they have diverse mating systems and separate sexes (dioecy) that evolved many times independently. The classic "two-factor" model for evolution of separate sexes proposes that males and females can evolve from hermaphrodites via the spread of male and female sterility mutations that turn hermaphrodites into females and males, respectively. This widely accepted model was inspired by early genetic work in dioecious white campion (Silene latifolia) that revealed the presence of two sex-determining factors on the Y-chromosome, though the actual genes remained unknown.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale lipid bilayer vesicles released by almost all cell types and can be found in biological fluids, such as blood and urine. EVs play an important role in various physiological and pathological processes via cell-cell communication, highlighting their potential applications as diagnostic markers for diseases and therapeutic drug delivery carriers. Although various methods have been developed for the isolation of EVs from biological fluids, most of them exhibit major limitations, including low purity, long processing times, and high cost.

Background: Gastric cancer is a common cause of cancer-related death worldwide, and peritoneal dissemination is the most frequent metastatic pattern of gastric cancer. However, the treatment of this disease condition remains difficult. It has been demonstrated that intraperitoneal radioimmunotherapy (ipRIT) with Cu-labeled cetuximab (anti-epidermal growth factor receptor antibody; Cu-cetuximab) is a potential treatment for peritoneal dissemination of gastrointestinal cancer in vivo.

Detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) are a class of very small and spherical diamond nanocrystals. They are used in polymer reinforcement materials or as drug delivery systems in the field of nanomedicine. Synthesized by detonation, only the final deaggregation step down to the single-digit nanometer size (<10 nm) unfolds their full potential.

Conventional nonlinear spectroscopy, which use classical probes, can only access a limited set of correlations in a quantum system. Here we demonstrate that quantum nonlinear spectroscopy, in which a quantum sensor and a quantum object are first entangled and the sensor is measured along a chosen basis, can extract arbitrary types and orders of correlations in a quantum system. We measured fourth-order correlations of single nuclear spins that cannot be measured in conventional nonlinear spectroscopy, using sequential weak measurement via a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia which afflicts tens of millions of people worldwide. Despite many scientific progresses to dissect the AD's molecular basis from studies on various mouse models, it has been suffered from evolutionary species differences. Here, we report generation of a non-human primate (NHP), common marmoset model ubiquitously expressing Amyloid-beta precursor protein (APP) transgenes with the Swedish (KM670/671NL) and Indiana (V717F) mutations.

We measured the concentrations of cesium isotopes (Cs, Cs, and Cs) in zooplankton samples collected in waters off the east coast of Japan from May 2015 to June 2020. By combining these data with those obtained previously from May 2012 to February 2015, we evaluated the long-term impacts of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident on marine zooplankton. Relatively high Cs concentrations in zooplankton, exceeding 10 Bq/kg-dry weight, were sporadically observed until June 2016, regardless of year or station.

The abnormal spindle-like, microcephaly-associated (ASPM) gene is a causative gene of autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) 5 in humans, which is characterized by a reduction in brain volume. It was previously reported that truncated Aspm proteins in transgenic mice caused major defects in the germline, a severe reduction in ovary weight and the number of follicles accompanied by reduced fertility. However; it remains unknown whether a loss of Aspm induces abnormal ovarian function, resulting in female infertility.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia worldwide. In AD, abnormal tau accumulates within neurons of the brain, facilitated by extracellular β-amyloid deposition, leading to neurodegeneration, and eventually, cognitive impairment. As this process is thought to be irreversible, early identification of abnormal tau in the brain is crucial for the development of new therapeutic interventions.

Particle counting analysis (PCA) with a multi-stage scintillation detector shows a new perspective on angularly resolved spectral characterization of GeV-scale, multi-species ion beams produced by high-power lasers. The diagnosis provides a mass-dependent ion energy spectrum based on time-of-flight and pulse-height analysis of single particle events detected through repetitive experiments. With a novel arrangement of multiple scintillators with different ions stopping powers, PCA offers potential advantages over commonly used diagnostic instruments (CR-39, radiochromic films, Thomson parabola, etc.

Protein domains of low sequence complexity do not fold into stable, three-dimensional structures. Nevertheless, proteins with these sequences assist in many aspects of cell organization, including assembly of nuclear and cytoplasmic structures not surrounded by membranes. The dynamic nature of these cellular assemblies is caused by the ability of low-complexity domains (LCDs) to transiently self-associate through labile, cross-β structures.

It has been observed that healthy tissues are spared at ultra-high dose rate (UHDR: >40 Gy/s), so called FLASH effect. To elucidate the mechanism of FLASH effect, we evaluate changes in radiation chemical yield (G value) of 7-hydroxy-coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7OH-C3CA), which is formed by the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (C3CA), under carbon ions (140 MeV/u) and protons (27.5 and 55 MeV) in a wide-dose-rate range up to 100 Gy/s.

Background And Objective: During lung cancer radiotherapy, the position of infrared reflective objects on the chest can be recorded to estimate the tumor location. However, radiotherapy systems have a latency inherent to robot control limitations that impedes the radiation delivery precision. Prediction with online learning of recurrent neural networks (RNN) allows for adaptation to non-stationary respiratory signals, but classical methods such as real-time recurrent learning (RTRL) and truncated backpropagation through time are respectively slow and biased.
