We compared differences in perfusion computed tomography (PCT)-derived arterial and venous cerebral blood flow (CBF) in moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) as an indication of changes in cerebral venous outflow patterns referenced to arterial inflow. Moderate-to-severe TBI patients (women 53; men 74) underwent PCT and were stratified into 3 groups: I (moderate TBI), II (diffuse severe TBI without surgery), and III (diffuse severe TBI after the surgery). There is strong evidence that augmentation of the brain's waste disposal system via stimulation of the meningeal lymphatics might be a promising therapeutic target for preventing neurological diseases. Intraventricular hemorrhage is one of the most fatal forms of brain injury that is a common complication of premature infants. Introduction: The teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have been examined in animal models and humans. The current study extends the prior literature by quantifying differences in brain structure for individuals with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) compared to typically developing controls, as well as examining FASD subtypes. We hypothesized the FASD group would reveal smaller brain volume, reduced cortical thickness, and reduced surface area compared to controls, with the partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS)/fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) subtypes showing the largest effects and the PAE/alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) subtype revealing intermediate effects.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and severe blood loss resulting in hemorrhagic shock (HS) are each leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and present additional treatment considerations when they are comorbid (TBI+HS) as a result of competing pathophysiological responses. A 5-year-old female Beagle Dog was euthanized following ten days of inappetence, lethargy, and pain in the left cervical region that was not responsive to steroids or antibiotics. At necropsy, there were multiple soft dark red to tan nodules throughout all lung lobes, abundant purulent subdural exudate over the right temporal lobe of the brain, and minimally enlarged submandibular and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. Impression smear of the subdural pus and histologic section of the lung and meninges demonstrated small aggregates of rod-shaped to filamentous bacteria often surrounded by Splendori-Hoeppli material.
