Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

The role of gut dysbiosis in shaping immunotherapy responses is well-recognized, yet its effect on the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy and immunotherapy combinations remains poorly understood. We analyzed gut microbiota in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with chemo-immunotherapy, comparing responders and non-responders using 16S rRNA sequencing. Responders showed higher microbial richness and abundance of specific genera like Faecalibacterium and Subdoligranulum, and the phylum Firmicutes.

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a critical emergency with low survival rates despite advancements in prehospital care. Timely vascular access for medication administration is essential, with intravenous (IV) and intraosseous (IO) access as primary strategies. While IO offers rapid and reliable access under challenging conditions, its effectiveness compared to IV access remains uncertain.

Introduction: Substance use disorders are prevalent among women living with HIV and women experiencing intimate partner violence. The study aimed to examine the association between intimate partner violence and substance-related service utilization among women living with and without HIV.

Methods: Utilizing Women's Interagency HIV Study (2013-2019) data, linear regression models in 2023-2024 estimated the association between recent and lifetime intimate partner violence and drug- and alcohol-related service utilization among women reporting substance use.

Background: As the United States population ages, the incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) among older adults are on the rise.

Aims: This study provides updated estimates of the IBD burden in older adults and examines changes from 2000 to 2021.

Methods: We analyzed data on IBD incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in older adults (> 70 years) in the United States from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, stratified by sex and state.

Objective: Primary liver cancer (PLC) is projected to be the third leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States in 2040. We examine the burden of PLC in the United States, stratified by sex, state and aetiological risk factors.

Methods: Data on PLC prevalence, incidence, death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of Mother's Own Milk (MOM) and donor human milk (DHM) for breastfeeding support, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, where DHM is often scarce.
  • A study in Ekiti State found that out of 321 healthcare workers surveyed, while many had good knowledge of DHM, there were varying attitudes towards its safety and efficacy, with some reluctance to accept DHM for their own children.
  • Overall, the study showed that most healthcare workers would encourage mothers to donate milk and use DHM for infants in their care, but negative perceptions and influences from the media impacted their openness to DHM.

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is becoming more common in the U.S., especially among patients with severe aortic stenosis, but there is limited research on its effectiveness for solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients and patients with liver cirrhosis.
  • A study using data from 2016 to 2020 compared outcomes between TAVR and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in these populations and found that TAVR is linked to significantly lower rates of in-hospital mortality and other adverse events compared to SAVR.
  • Both groups showed similar readmission rates after six months, but TAVR resulted in shorter hospital stays and lower costs compared to SAVR, highlighting

  • The NRG/RTOG 0436 study investigated whether adding cetuximab to chemoradiation for non-operative esophageal cancer would improve patient-reported outcomes (PROs), focusing on the FACT-Esophageal cancer subscale (ECS).
  • The study was stopped early due to failing to meet overall survival (OS) targets; among 344 enrolled patients, those receiving CRT plus cetuximab showed less improvement in ECS compared to those receiving standard CRT alone (37% vs. 53%).
  • Overall, the results indicated that adding cetuximab did not enhance PROs related to symptoms, swallowing, or eating, and there was no significant link between clinical complete

  • Despite improved treatments, colorectal cancer (CRC) still has high mortality rates, but some evidence points to aspirin (ASA) potentially lowering CRC incidence and metastasis.
  • A study of over 814,000 CRC patients revealed that those using ASA had significantly lower rates of total and gastrointestinal metastasis compared to non-users.
  • Results showed that ASA users had better outcomes even after adjusting for factors like age and other health conditions, although more research is needed to understand how it works and how long treatment should last to be effective.

Article Synopsis
  • Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, particularly in patients who experience acute myocardial injury (AMI), but detailed outcomes for these patients have been understudied.
  • The research analyzed data from US hospitals between 2018 and 2020, focusing on adults with AMI to compare outcomes based on the presence of FH.
  • Findings revealed that FH patients had higher rates of ST-elevation and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarctions, required more invasive procedures, but exhibited lower all-cause mortality and lower incidences of type 2 MI and takotsubo cardiomyopathy compared to those without FH.

Epinephric diverticula are distal esophageal pouches protruding from the epithelial lining of the esophagus while esophageal leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle lesions that constitute a significant percentage of all gastrointestinal leiomyomas. Epinephric diverticula and esophageal leiomyomas are common individually but their co-existence is rare. Moreover, they present asymptomatically but can occasionally present with complains of dysphagia and weight loss.
