Introduction: Ventilatory efficiency ('/' ) has been shown to predict postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in lung resection candidates. '/' is determined by arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide ( ) and by dead space to tidal volume ratio ( / ). We hypothesised and / contribute equally to the increase in '/' in lung resection patients.

Objectives: Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common malignancy of the female genital tract in developed countries, yet preventive screening remains unavailable, and diagnostic approaches are largely limited to symptomatic women. Despite advancements in precision oncology, the biology of precancerous lesions is less understood compared to advanced disease. To address this gap, we conducted a prospective case-control study analysing uterine lavage fluid from women undergoing diagnostic evaluation.

Introduction: Muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an emerging method in the diagnosis and monitoring of muscular dystrophies. This cross-sectional, comparative study aimed to evaluate quantitative MRI (qMRI) parameters of the lumbar paraspinal muscles (LPM) in myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2), to assess their relationship with functional examination, and to evaluate their evolution with aging.
Methods: The study enrolled 37 DM2 patients and 90 healthy volunteers (HV) who were matched based on physiological parameters to create 35 pairs.

Objectives: This evidence implementation project aimed to assess and improve compliance with evidence-based neuroimaging criteria for adult patients with suspected stroke.
Introduction: Stroke is the second leading cause of mortality and severe disability, requiring timely and accurate diagnosis. Clinical guidelines recommend brain imaging within 60 minutes of hospital arrival for suspected stroke patients.

Background: Early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) significantly improves its management and patients' survival. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are peculiar covalently closed transcripts involved in gene expression modulation whose dysregulation has been extensively reported in CRC cells. However, little is known about their alterations in the early phases of colorectal carcinogenesis.

Aim: To assess nutritional status and muscle mass loss in patients with chronic obstructice pulmonary disease (COPD) from the Czech National Database of COPD and to evaluate the association of nutritional parameters with COPD phenotype, lung function, COPD-related symptoms and long-term survival.
Methods: A total of 343 patients with known body composition parameters - body mass Index (BMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI) and mid-art muscle circumference (MAMC) - were included in the analysis. Descriptive statistical methods were used to assess differences between groups, and overall survival was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method after 9 years of follow-up.

The role of electrocardiography (ECG) in predicting mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has not been sufficiently established. Research question: Is a normal ECG associated with a better prognosis than an abnormal ECG in patients with COPD? ECG parameters were assessed in patients enrolled in the Czech Multicenter Research Database of COPD. We assessed ECGs from baseline (August 2013) until December 31, 2019, or until death.

Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell malignancy characterized by an abnormal increase in monoclonal immunoglobulins. Despite significant advances in treatment, some patients progress to more aggressive forms of multiple myeloma, including extramedullary disease or plasma cell leukemia. Although the exact molecular mechanisms are not known, several studies have confirmed the involvement of small extracellular vesicle-enriched microRNAs in multiple myeloma progression.

Pressure ulcers (PUs) impose a significant economic burden on healthcare systems, affecting patient quality of life and leading to substantial treatment costs. This study presents a cost-of-illness analysis of PU treatment in hospitalized patients in the Czech Republic, based on real-world clinical data. The analysis was conducted using a comprehensive methodology at a Czech university hospital, involving 304 hospitalizations.

Introduction: In health care, effective communication enhances teamwork and safety by minimizing adverse events. Evidence suggests that ongoing education should include communication skills training, as interprofessional communication relies on tools that facilitate seamless interaction.
Objective: This project aimed to improve communication practices among nurses in a long-term care unit by promoting evidence-based recommendations.

We assessed the diagnostic performance of the Narrow-Band Imaging (NBI) International Colorectal Endoscopic Classification (NICE) and the Japan NBI Expert Team classification (JNET) in predicting histological outcomes of advanced colorectal lesions. Additionally, we evaluated the sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) of the JNET and NICE classifications individually for high-grade lesions (including HGD adenomas, intramucosal carcinomas, and T1 carcinomas). This was a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data, involving 211 patients (130 men, mean age 60 years) who underwent colonoscopy with endoscopic resection of advanced colorectal neoplasia (lesions ≥ 10 mm).

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to present the values of maximal isometric lumbar extensor muscle strength (MILEMS) and lumbar extensor muscle endurance (LEME) in healthy subjects and to study the influence of physiological factors on these parameters. MILEMS using a hand-held dynamometer in three positions (prone, sitting, standing) and LEME using the Biering-Sørensen test were assessed in 115 healthy volunteers. The MILEMS measurements for the specific positions were correlated with each other (Pearson correlation coefficients 0.

Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a therapeutical option for the treatment of drug-resistant epileptic patients. The response to VNS varies from patient to patient and is difficult to predict. The proposed study is based on our previous work, identifying relative mean power in pre-implantation EEG as a reliable marker for VNS efficacy prediction in adult patients.

Introduction: The influence of various levels of sedation depth on motor evoked potentials (MEP) reproducibility in youth is still unclear because of a lack of data. We tested the hypothesis that a deeper level of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) [bispectral index (BIS) 40 ± 5 compared to 60 ± 5] can affect surgeon-directed MEP and their interpretation in youths.
Methods: All patients received TIVA combined with propofol and remifentanil.

: Ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers often share clinical characteristics and are typically diagnosed at advanced stages due to nonspecific symptoms. The utility of tumor markers, particularly CA125 and HE4, in the diagnosis and follow-up of these cancers remains an area of active investigation. : The CEEGOG (Central and Eastern European Gynecologic Oncology Group) OX-01 study aimed to evaluate HE4's role alongside CA125 in follow-up for advanced-stage ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers.

Protein kinases are key regulators of numerous biological processes and aberrant kinase activity can cause various diseases, particularly cancer. Herein, we report the identification of new series of highly selective kinase inhibitors based on the thieno[3,2-b]pyridine scaffold. The weak interaction of the thieno[3,2-b]pyridine core with the kinase hinge region allows for profoundly different binding modes all of which maintain high kinome-wide selectivity, as illustrated by the isomers MU1464 and MU1668.
