Article Abstract

This study evaluates the influence of inadequate transport conditions on the microbiological quality of chilled chicken meat packaged in plain and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). The experiments simulated the temperature increase during sample transport to 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, and 25°C with exposure times of 1, 2, 3, and 4 h. Aerobic plate count (APC), psychrotrophic microorganisms count (PMC), β-D-glucuronidase-positive Escherichia coli, and Salmonella spp. were evaluated immediately after the exposure to the elevated temperature (0 h), 3 h, and 24 h after the return to the temperature of ≤4°C. The upper acceptable limits for APC and PMC were set for each combination of investigated chicken meat and packaging type, taking also the initial bacterial condition into account. Chilled chicken breast samples in plain packaging exceeded the APC limits in 16 cases and PMC limits in 20 cases when exposed to temperatures of >4°C, while only 2 MAP samples exceeded APC limits and 8 samples PMC limits, respectively. In chicken legs, 8 samples in plain packaging exceeded the APC limits and 15 the PMC limits, while 12 samples in MAP exceeded the APC limits and 19 the PMC limits. In 402 samples (31.9%) in which the presence of E. coli was detected, its amount ranged from 1.70 to 3.65 log CFU.g. It was more commonly detected in chicken legs (255 of 630; 40.5%) than chicken breasts (147 of 630; 23.3%) but was not related to exposure temperature, exposure time, or time until examination. The presence of Salmonella spp. was not detected in any of the samples. Data acquired in the presented study will be used in the development of software helping the national supervisory authorities in the Czech Republic to evaluate whether inadequate transport of samples to analytical laboratories could have affected the microbiological profile of the sample.

Transformer-based ECG classification for early detection of cardiac arrhythmias.

Front Med (Lausanne)

August 2025

Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana, Arecibo, PR, United States.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) classification plays a critical role in early detection and trocardiogram (ECG) classification plays a critical role in early detection and monitoring cardiovascular diseases. This study presents a Transformer-based deep learning framework for automated ECG classification, integrating advanced preprocessing, feature selection, and dimensionality reduction techniques to improve model performance. The pipeline begins with signal preprocessing, where raw ECG data are denoised, normalized, and relabeled for compatibility with attention-based architectures.

Background: The growing burden of ovarian cancer is attracting widespread attention; the impact factors and the evolution trend of ovarian cancer burden need to be further studied.

Methods: Ovarian cancer disease burden data for Chinese women were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease study 2021. We performed Age-Period-Cohort (APC) analysis to evaluate evolution trends across age, period, and cohort dimensions and identify contributing factors.

Introduction: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality, and tobacco use is a significant modifiable risk factor. This study analyzed trends in tobacco-associated stroke mortality in the United States from 1999 through 2023 using CDC WONDER data.

Methods: We included adults aged ≥ 25 years with cerebrovascular disease (ICD-10 I60-I69) as the underlying cause of death and tobacco-related disorders (ICD-10 F17.

Background: Breast cancer, the most common cancer in women, also affects men. However, detailed assessments of the disease burden and future projections for male breast cancer (MBC) remain limited.

Methods: Data on global male breast cancer mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), prevalence, and incidence from 1990 to 2021 were analyzed.

Objective: To analyze temporal trends of diet-attributable cancer mortality in China (1990-2021), compare patterns between China and regions with varying development levels, and explore gender-specific characteristics to inform targeted prevention strategies.

Study Design: Cross-sectional and time-series analyses.

Methods: We conducted cross-sectional and time-series analyses of nine dietary risk factors across China, the global region, and five Socio-demographic Index (SDI) - stratified regions.
