Data-based detection and quantification of causation in complex, nonlinear dynamical systems is of paramount importance to science, engineering, and beyond. Inspired by the widely used methodology in recent years, the cross-map-based techniques, we develop a general framework to advance towards a comprehensive understanding of dynamical causal mechanisms, which is consistent with the natural interpretation of causality. In particular, instead of measuring the smoothness of the cross-map as conventionally implemented, we define causation through measuring the for the continuity of the investigated dynamical system directly.

Optical phased arrays (OPAs) are essential optical elements in applications that require the ability to manipulate the light-wavefront, such as beam focusing and light steering. To miniaturize the optical components, active metasurfaces, especially graphene metasurfaces, are used as competent alternatives. However, the metasurface cannot achieve strong resonance effect and phase control function in the mid-infrared region only relying on a single-layer graphene.

Matching 16S rRNA gene sequencing data to a metabolic reference database is a meaningful way to predict the metabolic function of bacteria and archaea, bringing greater insight to the working of the microbial community. However, some operational taxonomy units (OTUs) cannot be functionally profiled, especially for microbial communities from non-human samples cultured in defective media. Therefore, we herein report the development of Hierarchical micrObial functions Prediction by graph aggregated Embedding (HOPE), which utilizes co-occurring patterns and nucleotide sequences to predict microbial functions.

Origami-based mechanical metamaterials and metastructure have been demonstrated to exhibit unique properties originating from their intricate geometries of folding. This research aims to extend the current investigation level from quasistatics to dynamics. In detail, this research focuses on the wave dynamics of a metastructure composed of stacked Miura-origami (SMO) units.

Self-locking origami structures are characterized by their piecewise linear constitutive relations between force and deformation, which, in practice, are always completely opaque and unmeasurable: the number of piecewise segments, the positions of non-smooth points, and the linear parameters of each segment are unknown a priori. However, acquiring this information is of fundamental importance for understanding the origami structure's dynamic folding process and predicting its dynamic behaviors. This, therefore, arouses our interest in adopting a dynamical identification process to determine the model and to estimate the parameters.
