Photoplethysmography is a key sensing technology which is used in wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. Currently, photoplethysmography sensors are used to monitor physiological parameters including heart rate and heart rhythm, and to track activities like sleep and exercise. Yet, wearable photoplethysmography has potential to provide much more information on health and wellbeing, which could inform clinical decision making.

Emerging evidence of the relationship between the microbiome composition and the development of numerous diseases, including cancer, has led to an increasing interest in the study of the human microbiome. Technological breakthroughs regarding DNA sequencing methods propelled microbiome studies with a large number of samples, which called for the necessity of more sophisticated data-analytical tools to analyze this complex relationship. The aim of this work was to develop a machine learning-based approach to distinguish the type of cancer based on the analysis of the tissue-specific microbial information, assessing the human microbiome as valuable predictive information for cancer identification.

In a clinical context, physicians usually take into account information from more than one data modality when making decisions regarding cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Artificial intelligence-based methods should mimic the clinical method and take into consideration different sources of data that allow a more comprehensive analysis of the patient and, as a consequence, a more accurate diagnosis. Lung cancer evaluation, in particular, can benefit from this approach since this pathology presents high mortality rates due to its late diagnosis.

The alteration in the shape of the femoral neck is an important radiographic sign for scoring canine hip dysplasia (CHD). Previous studies have reported that the femoral neck thickness (FNT) is greater in dogs with hip joint dysplasia, becoming progressively thicker with disease severity. Adequate radiographic positioning on the X-ray table is paramount for canine hip dysplasia (HD) screening. The aims of this study were to evaluate femoral parallelism on normal ventrodorsal hip extended (VDHE) view and the effect of femoral angulation (FA) on Norberg Angle (NA) and Hip Congruency Index (HCI). The femoral parallelism was evaluated comparing the alignment of the long femoral axis with the long body axis in normal VDHE views and the effect of FA on NA and HCI on repeated VDHE views with different levels of FA.

Cardiovascular imaging studies provide a multitude of structural and functional data to better understand disease mechanisms. While pooling data across studies enables more powerful and broader applications, performing quantitative comparisons across datasets with varying acquisition or analysis methods is problematic due to inherent measurement biases specific to each protocol. We show how dynamic time warping and partial least squares regression can be applied to effectively map between left ventricular geometries derived from different imaging modalities and analysis protocols to account for such differences.

Purpose: The development of accurate methods for retinal layer and fluid segmentation in optical coherence tomography images can help the ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and follow-up of retinal diseases. Recent works based on joint segmentation presented good results for the segmentation of most retinal layers, but the fluid segmentation results are still not satisfactory. We report a hierarchical framework that starts by distinguishing the retinal zone from the background, then separates the fluid-filled regions from the rest, and finally, discriminates the several retinal layers.

Biochemical-chemical sensing with plasmonic sensors is widely performed by tracking the responses of surface plasmonic resonance peaks to changes in the medium.
