Coral reefs, vital ecosystems supporting diverse marine life, are primarily shaped by the clonal expansion of coral colonies. Although the principles of coral clonal growth, involving polyp division for spatial extension, are well-understood, numerical modelling efforts are notably scarce in the literature. In this article, we present a parsimonious numerical model based on the cloning of polyps, using five key parameters to simulate a range of coral shapes.

We give a comprehensive mean-field analysis of the partisan voter model (PVM) and report analytical results for exit probabilities, fixation times, and the quasistationary distribution. In addition, and similarly to the noisy voter model, we introduce a noisy version of the PVM, named the noisy partisan voter model (NPVM), which accounts for the preferences of each agent for the two possible states, as well as for idiosyncratic spontaneous changes of state. We find that the finite-size noise-induced transition of the noisy voter model is modified in the NPVM leading to the emergence of intermediate phases that were absent in the standard version of the noisy voter model, as well as to both continuous and discontinuous transitions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe chiral topological superconductor, which supports propagating nontrivial edge modes while maintaining a gapped bulk, can be realized hybridizing a quantum-anomalous-Hall thin slab with an ordinary s-wave superconductor. We show that by sweeping the voltage bias in a normal-hybrid-normal double junction, the pattern of electric currents in the normal leads spans three main regimes. From single-mode edge-current quantization at low bias, to double-mode edge-current oscillations at intermediate voltages and up to diffusive bulk currents at larger voltages.

We study the effect of a local potential shift induced by a side electrode on the edge modes at the boundary between gapped and ungapped bilayer graphene. A potential shift close to the gapped-ungapped boundary causes the emergence of unprotected edge modes, propagating in both directions along the boundary. These counterpropagating edge modes allow edge backscattering, as opposed to the case of valley-momentum-locked edge modes.

The zero-temperature Ising model is known to reach a fully ordered ground state in sufficiently dense random graphs. In sparse random graphs, the dynamics gets absorbed in disordered local minima at magnetization close to zero. Here, we find that the nonequilibrium transition between the ordered and the disordered regime occurs at an average degree that slowly grows with the graph size.

In this work we assess the role played by the dynamical adaptation of the interactions network, among agents playing Coordination Games, in reaching global coordination and in the equilibrium selection. Specifically, we analyze a coevolution model that couples the changes in agents' actions with the network dynamics, so that while agents play the game, they are able to sever some of their current connections and connect with others. We focus on two action update rules: Replicator Dynamics (RD) and Unconditional Imitation (UI), and we define a coevolution rule in which, apart from action updates, with a certain rewiring probability p, agents unsatisfied with their current connections are able to eliminate a link and connect with a randomly chosen neighbor.

We derive universal bounds for the finite-time survival probability of the stochastic work extracted in steady-state heat engines and the stochastic heat dissipated to the environment. We also find estimates for the time-dependent thresholds that these quantities do not surpass with a prescribed probability. Multicentre, retrospective cohort study with multivariable Cox proportional-hazards modelling and survival-time inverse-probability-weighting, evaluating the impact of different treatments on survival of proven COVID-19 patients admitted to two Hospitals in the province of Piacenza, Italy. Use of tocilizumab and of high doses of low molecular weight heparin, but not of antivirals (either alone or in combination), azithromycin, and any corticosteroid, was independently associated with lower mortality. Our results support further clinical evaluation of high doses of low molecular weight heparin and tocilizumab as COVID-19 therapeutics.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infects humans through the angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE-2) receptor expressed on many cells, including lymphocytes. In Covid-19 patients IL-6 is overexpressed, and hyperactivated plasmacytoid lymphocytes are detected in peripheral blood film. We hypothesize that, due to the unpredictable interaction between the new virus and the B cell lineage of infected patients, a cascade of out of control events can ensue, capable of determining unexpected pathologic disorders involving such lineage.

The Coulomb drag effect has been observed as a tiny current induced by both electron-hole asymmetry and interactions in normal coupled quantum dot devices. In the present work we show that the effect can be boosted by replacing one of the normal electrodes by a superconducting one. Moreover, we show that at low temperatures and for sufficiently strong coupling to the superconducting lead, the Coulomb drag is dominated by Andreev processes, is robust against details of the system parameters, and can be controlled with a single gate voltage.

The helical distribution of the electronic density in chiral molecules, such as DNA and bacteriorhodopsin, has been suggested to induce a spin-orbit coupling interaction that may lead to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Key ingredients for the theoretical modelling are, in this context, the helically shaped potential of the molecule and, concomitantly, a Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling due to the appearance of a magnetic field in the electron reference frame. We present measurements of quantized conductance in electrostatically induced quantum point contacts in bilayer graphene. The application of a perpendicular magnetic field leads to an intricate pattern of lifted and restored degeneracies with increasing field: at zero magnetic field the degeneracy of quantized one-dimensional subbands is four, because of a twofold spin and a twofold valley degeneracy. By switching on the magnetic field, the valley degeneracy is lifted.
