Objective: To observe the effects of glucosamine sulfate on the immunity of normal mice.
Methods: Female ICR mice were divided by weight into four groups, including low dose group (150 mg x kg(-1)), medium dose group (300 mg x kg(-1)), high dose group (900 mg x kg(-1)) and normal control group. Spleen and thymus were weighted 30 days later, cell mediated immunity, humoral immunity, phagocytosis of mononuclear phagocyte and the activity of NK cell were assayed.

WU polyomavirus (WUPyV), a new member of the genus Polyomavirus in the family Polyomaviridae, is recently found in patients with respiratory tract infections. In our study, the complete genome of the two WUPyV isolates (FZ18, FZTF) were sequenced and deposited in GenBank (accession nos. FJ890981, FJ890982).

Objective: To establish a duplex nested PCR assay system which is capable for detecting O1 and O139 groups of Vibrio cholerae simultaneously, and is applicable to environmental specimens from routine cholera surveillance.
Methods: Based on nucleic acid sequences available in GenBank, six sets of primers were designed by PrimerSelect program of DNAStar, targeting the rfb gene that encodes the O antigens of O1 and O139 V. cholerae, respectively.
AIDS Patient Care STDS
June 2009
Fujian Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Fuzhou, China.
In recent decades, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have reemerged and spread as a major public health problem in China. However, little effort has been made on promoting appropriate health-seeking behaviors among people living with STDs. A randomly selected sample of market vendors in Fuzhou (N = 4510) was recruited and assessed from 2003 to 2004 to examine their choice of pharmacy versus hospital, and folk remedy versus Western medicine when having STD symptoms.

We introduced 38 single-point amino acid changes into the hemagglutinin (HA) protein of the reassortmented A/Duck/Mongolia/54/01 (H5N2) strain by a PCR random mutation method. The percentage of amino acid changes on the HA domain that did not abrogate hemadsorption activity was calculated to be 89%. Changes in the amino acids of the HA2 domain were observed to be about half of those in the HA1 domain of these mutants.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) has been usually analyzed in marine and other sources by HPLC separation, followed by alkaline treatment and fluorescence assay. However, the applications of such methods were limited because of their tedious extraction and derivation procedures. A simpler, rapid LC-MS method, using selected ion-monitoring, has now been developed, and used to identify and quantitate TTX in a marine gastropod of the genus Nassarius, collected from Fijian province of China.

Dengue fever is a growing public health problem in many countries since so far no effective vaccines are available. In this study, the domain III of dengue virus type 2 envelope was expressed in Escherichia coli without fusion of any carrier protein. The recombinant protein was detected in the form of inclusion bodies, which were solubilized in 8M urea and could be purified subsequently by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on an ion exchange column.

Objective: To ascertain the pathogen of aseptic encephalitis epidemic in Long-Yan city in Fujian, and to find out the genetic characteristics of the virus.
Methods: Rapid detection of enteroviral RNA by reverse transcription polymerasechain reaction (RT-PCR) was directly carried out in cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) to isolate and identify the viruses from CSF at the same time, and to detect the neutralization antibody in two serum specimens collected in acute and convalescence phase. Nucleotides of VP1 region was also analyzed by constructing phylogenetic tree.
