We show that solar irradiances calculated across Venus' clouds support the potential for Earth-like phototrophy and that treatment of Venus' aerosols containing neutralized sulfuric acid favor a habitable zone. The phototrophic potential of Venus' atmosphere was assessed by calculating irradiances (200-2000 nm, 15° solar zenith angle, local noon) using a radiative transfer model that accounted for absorption and scattering by the major and minor atmospheric constituents. Comparisons to Earth's surface (46 W m, 280-400 nm) suggest that Venus' middle and lower clouds receive ∼87% less normalized UV flux (6-7 W m) across 200-400 nm, yet similar normalized photon flux densities (∼4400-6200 μmol m s) across 350-1200 nm.

We present an approach for motion clustering based on a novel observation that a signature for putative pixel correspondences can be generated by collecting their residuals with respect to model hypotheses drawn randomly from the data. Inliers of the same motion cluster should have strongly correlated residuals, which are low when a hypothesis is consistent with the data in the cluster and high otherwise. After evaluating a number of hypotheses, members of the same cluster can be identified based on these correlations.

This paper addresses the development of predictive models for distinguishing pre-symptomatic infections from uninfected individuals. Our machine learning experiments are conducted on publicly available challenge studies that collected whole-blood transcriptomics data from individuals infected with HRV, RSV, H1N1, and H3N2. Detection of pathogens in a food matrix is challenging due to various constraints including complexity and the cost of sample preparation for microbial analysis from food samples, time period for the detection of pathogens, and high cost and specialized resources required for advanced molecular assays. To address some of these key challenges, this study illustrates a simple and rapid colorimetric detection of target bacteria in distinct food matrices, including fresh produce, without prior isolation of bacteria from a food matrix. This approach combines bacteriophage-induced expression of an exogenous enzyme, alkaline phosphatase, the specific colorimetric substrate that generates insoluble color products, and a simple filtration method to localize the generation of colored signal.

Background: In light of mounting evidence of the physical and psychological harms associated with solitary confinement, many correctional systems, state legislators, courts, and even international human rights bodies are increasingly recommending and implementing reforms to mitigate the harms of solitary confinement, if not abolish the practice entirely. In this piece, we examine three specific infrastructural changes to solitary confinement conditions and practices implemented in Washington state prisons with such harm minimization goals in mind: (1) building so-called "nature imagery rooms" to play videos of outdoor spaces, (2) eliminating punishments for self-harm, and (3) conducting daily cell-front wellness checks.

Results: Drawing on 183 in-depth qualitative interviews with both staff working in and people imprisoned in solitary confinement units conducted in Washington state restrictive housing units in 2017, we find that these three reforms not only resulted in limited successes but also generated new conflicts.

The search for life beyond Earth has focused on Mars and the icy moons Europa and Enceladus, all of which are considered a safe haven for life due to evidence of current or past water. The surface of Venus, on the other hand, has extreme conditions that make it a nonhabitable environment to life as we know it.
