Populations of sensory neurons are not homogeneous. Even neighboring neurons located in the same brain area can process identical stimuli in significantly different ways. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are a prominent example of such heterogeneity - they exhibit diverse properties whose computational role and purpose remain mysterious. In this review, we explore normative theories of neural computation that attempt to explain the origins and role of functional variability in the retina. We first express a general mathematical formulation of normative theories of neural computation and identify components of these theories that can explain the heterogeneity of sensory populations. We then organize existing theoretical studies of retinal coding according to the factors they highlight as explanations of the computational diversity in the retina - the beginning of the visual hierarchy.

Background: Over the past decade, calls for research assessment reform have grown, led by initiatives such as the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and the Leiden Manifesto, and, more recently, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). A key element being discussed as part of research assessment reform is a shift towards more qualitative assessments, focussed on the content of research and the broad skills and competencies of researchers, and the array of contributions they make to knowledge creation and innovation. Narrative CV formats have emerged as a good practice example for enabling qualitative assessments of research projects and researchers, and are becoming more widely piloted and implemented.

Oral cancer is a major global health burden, ranking sixth in prevalence, with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) being the most common type. Importantly, OSCC is often diagnosed at late stages, underscoring the need for innovative methods for early detection. The oral microbiome, an active microbial community within the oral cavity, holds promise as a biomarker for the prediction and progression of cancer.

Background And Hypothesis: The dysconnectivity hypothesis of schizophrenia suggests that atypical neural communication underlies the disorder's diverse symptoms. Building on this framework, we propose that specific synaptic disturbances within thalamo-cortical circuits contribute to an imbalance in excitation and inhibition, leading to alteration in oscillations. Our study investigates these alterations and explores whether synaptic restoration can remediate neural activity of schizophrenia and align it with healthy patterns.

Metagenomic analyses of microbial communities have unveiled a substantial level of interspecies and intraspecies genetic diversity by reconstructing metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). The MAG database (MAGdb) boasts an impressive collection of 74 representative research papers, spanning clinical, environmental, and animal categories and comprising 13,702 paired-end run accessions of metagenomic sequencing and 99,672 high quality MAGs with manually curated metadata. MAGdb provides a user-friendly interface that users can browse, search, and download MAGs and their corresponding metadata information.

ConspectusWhat does the word antioxidant mean? Antioxidants are supposed to be nontoxic, versatile molecules capable of counteracting the damaging effects of oxidative stress (OS). Thus, when evaluating a candidate molecule as an antioxidant, several aspects should be considered. Antioxidants are more than free radical scavengers.
